Windows Update waking up notebook from Hibernation

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Jorge Domingos, Oct 15, 2009.

  1. It is possible for the Windows Update to wake up my notebook from
hibernation - even with the screen lid closed - and do the updates?

This happened last night during my sleep, to my surprise.

    Thanks

Not from hibernation, no. When your computer hibernates, it writes the
contents of RAM to the disk and turns itself off. It's possible to
have it turn itself on using wake-on-LAN, I suppose. Your computer
would have to support it, and it would have to be turned on in the
BIOS. Even if those conditions were met, I don't think WU uses such a
strategy (but I don't know for sure).

Could the machine have been sleeping, rather than hibernating?
