    Hello, hope you can help.

I've somewhow managed to disable the Windows 10 update service (wuauserv?). For the life of me, I can't reenable it: changing it's properties through the services dialogue gives me an "access denied" message.

I've a few places that may have been the culprit (and my fault - AusLogics BoostSpeed, Glary Utilities, a batch file - but trying restarting from there does nothing.

    Any pointers most welcome.

    Many thanks.

Hello and welcome MrCrow. That's an unusual post. How did you determine wuauserv was disabled?

    Thanks.

I have created a batch file:

    net stop wuauserv
    net stop bits
    net stop dosvc

This runs at startup but doesn't always... work. Odd, I know. So I've used a few third party apps that also disable the Windows Update service.

Yep, tried those commands - I have a batch file with those in it that I run as admin. The wuaserc won't start - at the CMD prompt it reports it is disabled. If I go into to services and try to start it, the start option is greyed out and changing its properties to "manual" (or anything else for that matter) gives an error dialogue "Access Denied".

    I'm confused!

Windows Update requires Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to be running. Check to see that RPC is set to start up automatically.

Hmm. In services, the dependencies tab on the updater appears the same as your screenshot above.

Well yeah, the dependencies are the same. It indicates that wuauserv depends on RPC running. So go to the RPC service and verify it's set to start automatically.

And you still can't do a Windows Update? If not, please try Seth 'troubleshooter' in post #4.

If that doesn't work, let's look at doing a System Restore.

Looks like sys restore time - I'll perform that OK. The troubleshooter failed - should have mentioned it, sorry - it comes back with an "unexpected error" and won't complete.

Somewhere the update is disabled... I'll post back with an update - probably tomorrow now.

    Thanks again!

    PS

When I try to start the service, this is given:

Which service is it you tried to start which yielded the above error?

I think I need to sleep (or not!) on it and revisit tomorrow :D

Well,I tried a couple of restores. Both failed. Once with Kasperksy locking a file (so I disabled the protections) then with an unexpected error. It's looking like a reinstall of Windows to me but I'm really reluctant to do that.

OK, so the SFC didn't find any issue. If I run "net start wuauserv", I get this error:

    77c069692c79086815f8663f8b37719e.jpg

When I go into Update and Security, the app just keeps going:

If I go into Services and try switching the parameter from "Disabled" to anything else, access is denied:

I am at a loss as to what to do next...

Probably the remnants of one of those is causing the problem you are having.
