Windows Search in Vista - doesn't find everything I need it to...

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Ben Radlinski, Jun 11, 2009.

  1. A few months ago, I was messing around with the Windows indexing options
, adding folders, etc. and it seems to have screwed up the way Search
works. I often need to access Folder Options, and I found the easiest
way to do this was by hitting the Start key and typing "Folder" since
I'm used to "Launchy" type utilities. However, for some reason, Folder
Options no longer appears as a search result. I've rebuilt the index
several times and it still doesn't show up. Neither does Programs and
Features. I haven't tested every Control Panel utility but these seem to
be the only 2 so far that do not show up on Search.

Anybody have any insight into why this might be happening?

    Thanks.

For the Search, you don't see the Tools tab with Folder Options when you
use the Windows-key/F-key combination for ADV Search?

What's the Search have to do with 'Folder Options' not showing or
Programs and Features not showing in Control Panel?

You have no clue how Vista works. I suggest getting the book, "Vista for
Retards", study real hard and come back in 6 months.

Yes, I could/can get to it that way, but I used to be able to get it by
typing "fold..." in the search box. Both FO and P&F appear in Control
Panel, search isn't indexing them for some reason, that's all.

I primarily use 3rd party tools when it comes to Vista, but I was hoping
this basic functionality would work, because it once did (in Vista). I
guess this is the wrong place to ask questions about Vista.

Better to use vista search with indexing turned off, or to use a 3rd
    party tool for searching!

Now go get AgentRansack from Mythicsoft, or their higher-end FileLocator
    Pro.

Actually, this is the right place - just don't step into a troll trap
    with your foot.

Vista search is possibly the worst Vista feature of all (since it's
not bug-ridden like some parts of Vista, but designed on purpose to be
    a useless POS).

Install Agent Ransack. Shut off the indexing service. Searches work as
expected, system performance improves. All done. HAND.

So when are you going to use Vista? I see Microsoft Outlook Express
6.00.2900.5512 O in your headers and last I checked, that version of OE
    runs on XP.

I suggest you get the book "Manners for Dummies".

SO now this guy has discoevred WinExplorer is fouled up in Vista, he MIGHT

The trolls have been hyperactive lately. Best to ignore them.

Start menu searching has its own settings, independent of the search
options in control panel. You can check the settings by right-clicking on
a blank area of the Start menu and choosing Properties. Then click the
Customize button on the Start Menu tab. Scroll down to the item "search
programs" and enable it. Now Start menu searches should return programs,
including control panel items like Folder Options.
