Windows 7 Question

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by joe53@newsgroup.nospam, Sep 22, 2009.

  1. Sorry,
Didn't find a post for 7, I'm downloading Windows 7 from the Technet site,
which downloads as a .iso file. My question is what do I do with the file
after I've downloaded it. I tried to boot off of it as to get ready to
install the OS but nothing happens.
    Thanks Craig

You have a technet subscription and don't know how to use an ISO?

Hmmm. If you don't know what to do with an iso........
Two things. Some Virtual Machine applications allow you to mount an iso to
install from, or, use a burner application to create a bootable disk from
the iso. Nero will do it, so will CDBurner XP Pro (which is free and the one
    I use). There are others...

Use the ISO Buster which is available at the TechNet site

    Craig,
    Download and install Imgburn.
Now you can burn the .iso to a DVD and boot to it.

You have to burn the iso to a CD or DVD and do the burning with a
program that handles iso files correctly. There are a number of such
programs to choose from; I use a freeware program called ImgBurn.

You then have to boot from the CD or DVD you created.

You burn it to DVD, and it makes a bootable DVD. If you don't have
software to burn to ISO, google "Express Burn".

You can boot an .iso with a virtual machine manager. Otherwise you may
need to burn it to cd not as an .iso but as it's original form.

In my mind, the most elegant way to install Win7 for testing is in a
virtual partition. Then you can install your .iso directly. I recommend
vBox. Here is a tutorial I made a while ago how to do that. ( 'Tutorial:
How to install Windows7 in a Virtual Partition « How-To Geek Forums'
    ()
    )

I guess you're completely clueless, right?
The full (not trial) RTM Windows 7 has been available via both TechNet and
MSDN subscriptions for some time now.
Thanks to other, helpful, responses, the OP now knows what do do with an
    ISO.
    Try to keep up ;-)

No, TechNet Plus has the full, unlimited versions of their OSes.
The number of installs is limited to ten in older versions such as XP
but there is no time limit. I've had XP installed on one of our test
    machines
for over a year with no problems.
