    How long has Zone Alarm been installed and what version is it?
    Some versions actually include an AntiVirus protector.
    Plus if you have any other AntiMalware software installed, Zone Alarm won't play nicely with these.

    Plus, when ZoneAlarm was installed, was the windows firewall disabled?
    2 Firewalls running will cause allsorts of problems.

    From Win 8 onwards I've never recommended a third party firewall be installed..... it really isn't needed.
    A third-party firewall is a power-user tool — not an essential piece of security software.
    The Windows firewall is solid and trustworthy.
    While people can quibble about the Microsoft Security Essentials/Windows Defender virus detection rate, the Windows firewall does just as good a job of blocking incoming connections as other firewalls.

    Zone alarm was installed after windows started having problems. I installed just the anti-virus as a backup to make sure windows defender didn't miss anything

    Did you also run the CHKDSK /r/f?

    If so please post that information as well can be found by.

    Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog
    Type eventvwr (or eventvwr.msc) and hit OK.
    On the left side Select and Expand the list for Windows Logs
    Select Applications
    Now on the Right look under Source Colum for CHKDSK and select that (Match the date to the date that the program was ran).
    On the further right there will be a list called Actions and towards the bottom look for Copy
    Click on Copy and select Copy Details as Text
    Open this thread and Click in the Text Box
    Press Ctrl+V to paste the data into the post

    If anyone is still watching this or is interested in the outcome, it got fixed a while back. I let my friend borrow it to work on it and he asked if he could install Ubuntu on the computer. I said, "Go for it but it probably won't work." Spoiler alert: It did.

    It seems the hardware in the old computer was OK if worked with Ubuntu installed ...but no way of being sure of that without doing something as radical as starting again with a newly installed OS. Since it did work OK with Ubuntu, I wonder if W.10 would have worked too had it been cleanly installed using a downloaded Media Creation Tool?

    The problems with the computer gave a good reason to get a new computer though. I always consider getting a new one about every 5 years or so anyway. That's a fair length of service considering how much they get used. You end up with a better computer too because hardware improves quite a bit over over 5 - 6 years.
