What has happened to my Task Manager?

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by TGL, Jun 16, 2009.

This morning,I opened up the Task Manager and noticed that there are no
    longer any options such as
    Applications,Processes,Services,Performance,Networking,and Users(those
    tabs are no longer available).

In addition File,Options,View,Windows, and Help at the top has
    disappeared also.
Also, the minimize, maximize, and close out buttons have disappeared in
the upper right hand corner,so I can no longer minimize or close the
task manager window. However, when I switch to a different user, the task
manager window is normal and all those options are there.

I would perform a system restore to a date and time of last night at
11:00 pm or sometime yesterday, but I was having trouble with my internet
connection last night and yesterday and I'm afraid if I go back a day in
system restore,I will lose my internet connection again because Belkin
had me change some settings yesterday and last night that allowed me to
stay connected to the internet. Is there any way around using system
    restore?

    Thanks,
    Tonya

See the 6/15 thread that contains Task manager in the Subject.
Had you looked there first you would have had your solution without posting.

    GSalisbury,

I am free to come on this forum and ask a question without doing a
search for my problem. There is no rule that says you have to perform a
search for your problem before you post-and I don't always have the time
to do so. I figured it would be faster to just go ahead post and see if
I could get a quicker answer than if I performed an extensive search.
Well,I was right,I got a quick answer from you. But,you were of no help.
You could have provided an answer in the time it took you to type your
surly remark, but you did not. As for the thread your talking about-what
thread? All you typed was the date. I have actually figured this problem
out on my own. Out of frustration, especially after reading your remark,I
started clicking on the Task Manager window and all those options at the
top of the window are appearing again. When I clicked with my cursor,at
the top edge of the Task Manager, all those options appeared again. So,in
    a way......Thank You!

Anyway I will post my answer from yesterday again because it takes so much
time to go back over about 20 posts.

For Task Manager, double click in the white space just below the top
    boarder.

A minor correction: it doesn't have to be "just below the top border."
Anyplace on the border will work.

This is what's called "Small Footprint Mode." To change back and forth
from this mode to regular mode, just double-click anyplace on the
    border.

    Tonya,

Not looking to start a pissing contest but...
Yes you certainly are free to come here to ask or say whatever you want.
    No question about that part.
Likewise I'm free to try to teach you how to fish - I don't have to just
    give you one.
My response to you did not just have the date.
This was my opening comment "See the 6/15 thread that contains Task manager
    in the Subject".
It included your Task Manger Subject as a connecting reference (yes I forgot
to capitalize the em in manager).
In my view of this NG 's headers that 6/15 thread appeared a mere half a
dozen lines or so below yours.
    Easily in view.
It struck me that pointing this out might help you realize that when
something is there staring you in the face on the very Subject you are
questioning that it might worth a look.
No there is no rule that says you have to search (due diligence) before you
    ask.
Likewise there is no rule that prevents clues as answers.
Ironically, your frustrated clicking was the very answer.
It seems you could have saved that much more of the time you didn't have
(which you took to post) by trying that at the outset.
BTW, FWIW, typing Task Manager into the Search Help block of Start/Help and
Support (or Windows F1) would have also provided your answer even faster -
    two clicks.
Of course you would still have to read and understand what appeared but
    maybe we'll not go there.

    GS

    GSalisbury,

You obviously have too much time on your hands. Why do you take the
time to come on this forum just to scold someone for asking a question?
Why bother? You could have just provided a constructive answer and been
a hero. I don't know what your agenda is,but you certainly have a funny
way of making people feel welcome to come on this newsgroup forum.

I have actually been having multiple problems with my laptop computer
for several months now and I have been here on Vista Forums a lot
searching for answers to my computer problems. I know that my thread is
a newsgroup thread that is being mirrored in other computer forum
websites. But,as I said,I have done a lot of searches to my problems and
some of my problems have been resolved and others have not. So,I do come
on here a lot and perform searches for my problems. And,I have learned
so much about computers as a result. I've enjoyed it. But,it is not
enjoyable when someone like you comes on here to pick on someone. You
were simply rude and out of line. I shouldn't be punished for not
knowing much about computers,I mean isn't that the reason people come on
    here to ask questions?

When I came on here yesterday to post about my issue with the task
manager,it took literally seconds to post, and I got an answer, however
not helpful, rather quickly-so,I was correct in my assumption that I
would probably get a faster answer by just going ahead and posting.

I also figured that this was just one of many problems that my computer
is having that can not be solved. I mentioned a lot of them in my
thread,"I keep losing restore points". I eventually resolved my restore
point problem, but my other problems have not yet been resolved even
though I have performed extensive searches for them. I just thought that
this was one of those problems, that even with a search for the
answer, could not be solved. You know,to an amateur computer user such as
myself,my problem with the task manager missing all the tabs at the top
and not being able to close or minimize the task manager window could
appear to be a serious problem, that may seem to be a rather unique and
unsearchable problem-it was really a shock to me,hence my posting
without searching first. My computer warranty expired on May 10th and I
am now at the mercy of people on these forums for help. I would
appreciate nice answers instead of being scolded for asking a question.

I finally found the thread that you were talking about. I found it in
Newsgroups in Windows Live Mail-I finally got that set up-never used it
before, and just now learning how. But,I can only find threads,I think
that are only 2 months old-I can only go back so far.

But,I do appreciate the people who responded nicely with an answer to
my problem. I know that this thread will help other people-it seems to
have gotten a lot of attention.

    Thanks,
    Tonya

Sage advice. BTW, is there a better way to search for something like this,
other then reading the subject line of each post? When I last checked, there
were about 15,000 messages on this forum. I"m a patient man, but...

I am not the best searcher but...
I just right clicked on my NG Folder in Windows Mail (Outlook Express in XP)
and did a Find for Task Manager in Subject and found 23.
Then I did a Find in Message and found 35.
Of course any number of them would have been from this thread.
    I don't have all 15,000 headers/messages d/led - just those that accumulate
    through ordinary access.
You, of course, could probably do some sort of Google search on the entire
    NG.
Don't know if that helps but it's what occurs to me now.

If I independently had Task Manager (or other issues) I would pursue it/them
various ways depending upon my pain threshold.
I keep a Search Gadget up on my Sidebar so I might just toss something into
there to see what comes out.
    I might go to Help...
If I had NG's up and the issue fell into something I "subscribe" to I might
scan the headers of do the search above - maybe maybe not.
More often than not I'd probably - first thing - say what did I do
(differently/recently etc...) that makes it an issue now when it wasn't
    before and go from there.
    Geo.

The best way to search newsgroups is by using Googlegroups advanced
    search.

    GSalisbury,

The reason I did not find the thread you were referring to,is because I
don't use Newsgroups in Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail. I pretty
much do all my searching here on Vista Forums. I was able to find the
thread you were referring to about a day and a half ago when I set up
    Newsgroups in Windows Live Mail.

But,I also searched here on Vista Forums shortly after posting, and I
found dozens of threads where people had the same issue with the Task
Manager. People are really caught by surprise with it. Why would anyone
want to use it in small footprint mode anyway without all the options at
the top?-seems quite inconvenient-Why is the small footprint mode even
available? I actually thought it was just one more thing that went
corrupt with my computer,so I just come to the boiling point and posted
out of desperation without searching, after all,I have had something
similar happen to my internet explorer windows-I have had corrupt files
and had to perform numerous disc checks in order to fix issues with my
    computer.

As a result of all my searching,I also learned how to install a fan in
my laptop when it went bad while under warranty. I actually succeeded in
convincing Gateway that I knew how to install the fan, otherwise they
wouldn't have sent it out to me,it's really against their policy to do
so-they normally just have people send in their computer to have the fan
    replaced.

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding,I was just caught a little offguard
with the Task Manager and was desperate for help. I didn't know what
your intentions really were in responding to me. But,there's one point I
really would like to make: If everyone searched before they posted, then
no one would ever have a reason to post to begin with. Because,if you
search hard enough, you can just about find any answer to all your
computer problems. So,it wasn't just me who failed to search for the
task manager problem I was experiencing, the dozens of people before me
who posted about this same issue failed to search before they
posted, otherwise, they would not have had a reason to post. And the
person that started the thread that you mentioned about on 6/15 about
the same task manager problem failed to search also, but luckily he/she
wasn't reminded of that fact. But,I apologize for how I reacted to
you,you were only trying to help in your own way.

  15. Vista forums, again, leaches 90% of their posts and answers from the
    official Microsoft news groups.

Why don't you use Windows Mail to participate in the Microsoft news groups
and read the original posts and answers. Then you could also do searches on
topics of your choice and see what the actual participants have to say -
instead of reading mirror images of the same on a web site that is just
trying to make themselves look like they have a lot of activity.
