Waking up system

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Melvin, Sep 25, 2009.

I just completed updating a system doing a clean install of XP and then
updating to VISTA Home Premium. Everything works OK except I have one
problem. After some period of time the system either goes to sleep or
hibernates - don't know which. I thought I set the power properties so as
to turn the monitor off after 20 minutes but to leave the system on.

My question is - How do I get the system to "wake up" after it either goes
to sleep or hibernates. Moving the mouse and pressing the start button does
    nothing.

Installing XP first was completely unnecessary.

The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous
qualifying version's installation CD, not to have it installed. When
setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed, it will
prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just insert the
previous version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything proceeds
    quite normally and quite legitimately.

The power button. Mouse and keyboard should wake from sleep though not
    hibernate.

Are you sure? When was the last time you did a Vista Upgrade install?

I just did one today. Only way Vista allows you to even upgrade is if you
run the setup from inside Windows XP or Vista. Upgrade is disabled if you
boot up from the DVD to run setup. It never asks to check for an older
    version of Windows CD.

I think they might have done that with Window XP, but stop doing that with
    Vista.

My error, sorry. I was thinking of XP, not Vista.

As I indicated in my original post pressing the power button does nothing.
If it is going into hibernation then how does one get to the point to where
it was prior to the hibernation? How can I tell which mode it is in?

Sleep tends to flash the power light. There is no difference between off and
    hibernate.

If there is no difference between Off & hibernate then how do you
"re-start " the system. As I said, when it apparently "hibernates"
pressing the Off/On power button does nothing.

I suspect you are not hibernating. What happens if you choose hibernate from
    the shutdown menu.
