Does anyone know if it is possible to put XP to ovewrite Vista I know
Vista can overwrite/upgrade XP. As I don't particulary want to do a
fresh install & have the hassle of re-loading all my programs, as i'm
not impressesd with vista has too many quirky thing about it plus too
many different locations where stuff hides itself & then you have a
problem finding it with XP you knew where thing were.

Clean install is your only option. Make sure you have XP drivers
available at the computer manufacturer's website before you take the
    plunge.

  3. Things hide. You were familiar with XP. What don't you take the time to
become familiar with Vista? You can't keep XP forever.

Why bother to install Vista. Win 7 gonna be released end of October and even
it's buggy it has to be better than Vista.

    what you are referring
    to is called "downgrading"

    which means you want
    to downgrade your system
    from vista to winxp.

    unfortunately, you would
    have to reformat the disk
    then install winxp

and if winxp is an upgrade
    you would have to provide
    a validating o.s. to upgrade
from and then you will have
    to go through the activation
    process for winxp.

    also, you would have to
    double check to see if
    your computer can function
    with winxp drivers and if
    the computer maker has
    winxp hardware drivers
    for your system for downloading.

    however, there is an alternative
    to all of the above.

    you can download from
    microsoft.com a freeware
    called virtual pc.

    install virtual pc in vista
    then install your winxp
    in virtual pc.

    then you can launch winxp
    from inside vista as though
    winxp was actually installed
    on the hard disk directly.

if you never used virtual pc,
    then you can practice with
    installing linux or ubantu or
    both or more.

you can delete them if you
    need to start over and
    reinstall them until you
    figured out how virtual
    pc works.

    then once your comfortable
with virtual pc, you can install
    winxp and get it activated
    afterwards.

Don't look at things this Summer as somethign permanent - Windows7 had
    adderssesd many Vista obnoxious behaviors.

Welcome to the Club, we hate Vista also, but I was able, finally, to tame it
down to WinXp-like appearance except Search, WinExplorer, some colors, etc
have neve rbeen resolved and replaced with 3d party applications on my
machine. But still I am OK to live with this crap until Christmas, when
    Windows7 is out.
Many business customers downgraded to WinXP, but there's no point now to
    argue.

Windows7 is promised to be a compromize between annoying popups and
stumbling blocks due to security & Media-oriented behavior, and
power/functionality/efficiency on the other side - which are difficult to
combine in one OS, but Windows7 seems to be not bad.

I DONT THINK YOU CAN USE ORIGINAL WinXP disk to downgrade from Vista to it,
preseving settings/etc simply because XP wasn't aware of the future - Vista
came out after it, isn't it obvious? Bu tmaybe 3d party tools allow such
downgrading, I don't know, I know you will end up with dirty harddisk and
    some settings/docs messed up.
