Okay, so I've been working on this since 3 in the afternoon. It's now 9
oclock. I've tried everything I know about.
I'm trying to install Windows Media Player onto my computer, but it's
not working. This is not the first time this has happened. About 3 weeks
ago, I tried to install pictures from my email onto the computer, but it
didn't download (I had to send them to photobucket...)
This is what happens -> I click the downloadable link. It shows
everything, and then it starts to download. It finishes downloading, it
shows up the "copying file" screen, and when I go to the location, it's
not there! :sarc: ... I don't know why this is!
I do indeed have AVG, and I've read somewhere that must be the cause.
Also, I keep receiving this message saying Prevelance Reporter has
stopped working, and must be closed, or something like that, but it has
"slowed down" lately. It use to be every 5 minutes, now it's just like 6
    times a day?

So please please help. I have a huge headache, I haven't ate anything
yet. Itunes works, I'm listening to music on it. I need WMP for my new
phone, to upload music. Thank you.

    its all about AVG!
To resolve it you should allow prevalence reporter to access the net
through your firewall. add avgcmgr to firewall.

    Lemur:

Yeah, I saw that somewhere else as well, but I don't know how to do
    that.

I went into Windows Firewall, and then to allow access to a program
(that part), and I didn't see Prevelance Reporter anywhere. And I don't
    know how to add it.

Ok, thank you. I just did what the website said. I added it onto the
firewall, and pressed okay, and now I guess I can download the program?
Or do I have to do something else?

Sorry, I might sound dumb. I don't know much about computers..

    *It didn't work....*

I tried to redownload Windows Media Player 11 for Vista, and it did the
samething it did to me before. I tried to save the setup, and it didn't
save onto my desktop. I tried to just open it, not install the setup,
    and it didn't come up.

    I'm getting tired of this....

Okay, one thing at a time. Has the prevalence reporter prompt stopped
    appearing?

Yes, it has stopped appearing. But I don't know 100%, because it doesn't
show up as much as it use to.

But for now, nothing is coming up.

Get up out of the chair and go get something to eat.

Windows Media Player 11 is already installed if you are using Windows Vista.

But I have a question - Windows Media Player isn't working, which isn't
usual. What can be a reason for this? I did do system restore around 7
oclock today, to find that it hasn't been working for about a month now,
so I can't trace back to what I have done.... When I click it, it says
"...Windows Media Player is not a valid Win32 application".

I think this is the first you mentioned the system restore - or maybe
it's just late for me - lol.

I have some work for you to do.

If you would, go ahead and enter your system specs in the lower left
    window.

Get elevated command prompt. Run C: sfc /scannow

Look at your device manager and see if there are any problems.

Look at your Windows logs and look for problems.

Can you download software in safe mode?

    Do you have SP2 installed?

Please let me know what you find out.

Are you clicking on a shortcut to Windows Media Player or the actual
    executable?

Okay, so I tried to go to Run and I put in the command,
but they said you have to be an administrator to view the information
    under sfc.

But under Windows logs, I found something interesting. There were 29
errors in the past 24 hours. 4 have to do with VaultProxy. 2 Have to do
with WLAN (I do use wireless sometimes). 7 were application errors.
Distributed COM showed up twice, and it has happened 3 times.

I'm about to try to download the software in safe mode. I just had to
say what I've said above lol.

And, I do not have SP2 installed..

I searched up Windows Media Player under the computer search, and they
say it's a Shortcut. None of them are the real version, for some reason.

Haha, I wish. I've heard many many complaints about Vista, I just

It's not my laptop mainly though, so I'll have to wait.

Try launching WMP, directly. It's located in C:\Program Files\Windows Media
    Player\wmplayer.exe

I just did that. It's not there... I mean, the folder is, but the

You would have to take some deliberate steps to delete wmplayer.exe. It has
permission restrictions which doesn't allow it to be deleted easily by
    mistake.

It might be there, but you're not seeing it.

    Someone deliberately deleted it.

It might be malware, but you have antivirus software running.

You might have some bad sectors on the hard drive and the file information
    was lost.

You might want to check what Service Pack you have installed. SP2 will
install a version of Windows Media Player 11 (11.0.6002.18005). If you
already have SP2 installed, then you probably need to reinstall Windows
    Vista to get it back.

Where did you purchase your version of Vista. I know that Vista N versions in all
flavors of Vista purchased or acquired from Europe does not have the Windows Media
Player integrated as in North America because of the settlement between MS and the
    European Council

The thing is, I remember I use to have it. All my media use to go in
there. And then, I got in iPod Touch, and I downloaded iTunes for it.
Then, I remember Windows Media Player was giving me problems, and I did
-something- I forgot what though... But I don't remember fully deleting
it. Now I need it for my Env Touch, and it's still not working.

By the way, I did the sfc/scannow, and they did say some of my files
are corrupt. So maybe I do have malware?

And, this isn't my computer mainly, so I don't know much about where it
was from or what's on it. But I did check for SP2, and it didn't say it
    was installed.

If I install SP2, then would anything change? Would all my files be
deleted or anything? I believe this must be the reason.

    Thank you.
