I get this message after I start my HP laptop.

*Configuring updates: stage 3 of 3 0% complete. Do not turn off your
    computer
After restarting the computer: Updates were not configured correctly:
reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.
    *

It take almost 30-40 mins to complete all the above process and till it
asks me for LOGIN/PASSWORD screen. It does not happen all time when I
reboot. This is second time I have seen this in a month.

I have not installed any software since I purchased this laptop (1 year
    back)
Then why its configuring any updates? How to fix this ?

Windows version : Windows Vista Home Basic

I suggest the following as advised by Tim Quan (MSFT), Monday, March 17,
2008 on another forum for the same problem of another user:

Currently, I suggest trying a System Restore in WinRE using the following
    steps:

    1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start
    the computer.

    2. Press a key when the message "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …".

    3. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method,
    and then click Next.

    4. Click Repair your computer.

    5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your
    Windows installation and click Next

    6. At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box click on System Restore.

    7. Follow the System Restore Wizard as you normally would and choose the
    appropriate restore point.

    8. Click Finish to restore the system.

    ---------------
    Let us know.

Click on the Windows 'Orb' (Lower left of screen, left on status bar).
Select 'All Program' Select 'Windows Update' from the list.

Select whatever option you want eed. E.g. View update history is on the
    left list.

That being said, I am not sure what benefit there is in knowing exactly
which updates failed - unless, of course, you believe the message you
received was triggered by something other than an update failure.

    Tom Ferguson

    PS
If you go with the suggestion I gave (from Tim Quan (MSFT)), on completion,
the system will be in the security state existing as when installed. If it
is on, the automatic update service will re-apply any and all updates issued
through the service since installation. That will take some time.

  6. Hello Pooja_Ugalelo,

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2).

    This support for Windows
Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November 26, 2009.

    Availability of
chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location.

    Go to
    &
    select appropriate category (i.e., Download issue; Installation issue;

Issues after you install a service pack).

    March 25, 2008
The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

I do not know where you got the information that the system was "stuck at
the boot process". However, even if it is, my recommendation was and still
is is to do a restore install using the method outlined in my first reply.

If you read and understand what I wrote, you will realize that I did not and
    am not recommending anything else.

I would suggest you turn off automatic updates if you have it on. When
you see the update icon in the tray, view updates before you let them
install and then choose only one at a time. Maybe that way you will
find out which one is messing up. Orb, Windows Update, change settings.
I use "Download but let me choose".

Or go in and remove several of the latest updates to see if they will
reinstall. (Control Panel, Programs and Features, View installed updates.)

Have you run a system file check recently?
