Vista go-go

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Mark Levitski, Jun 6, 2009.

  1. WindowsXp was the best OS ever, after a few registry patches (e.g. notorious
failing Search by file contents), a few tweaks, and in my case total COLORS
customization, and in Classic mode, in the end it wasd the best.
it took several days to customize, and done.

With Vista, it's a dead end.
    Explorer forgets views.
Mail needs a fix before it can open doc, pdf, etc attachments form within
    mail instead of saving first
Black background or COlorSchemes in egenral is a problem if you dare to
    select it.
WL PhotoGallery & many new applications force white background which I can't
    stand, ignoring syste,m-wide color setting
You need to experiemnt with GPOE Editor (Group Policy) before it allows you
to run/modify things as an Administrator similar to WinXP.
Well that might not be bad, for security, bad it should be known and visible
instead of me Googiling whole day about why i can't delete or run certain
    programs.
    Sidebar gadget... shove it up......
Search function is a joke. It fails 80% time when searching arbitrary file
CONTENTS for a string. Don't tell me my settings are wrong, you don't know
    who I am.
Been doing computers for almost quarter of century, degreed engineer. Dont
worry abou tmy "settings" Worry about your algorithm that is designed for
    speed, not quality.
I was forced to buy FindFilePro and download Agentransack - first time in
history I had to go thru trouble of BUYING a search tool which used to be
part of Operating System in WinXP, Win2000.
I kno wVistae includes search... but it finds music & pictures! LOL. This
qualifies it for kids and retired people I guess. Not for serious business.
I am a scientist/engineer, these gadgets to me are as worthy as fried rat's
    tail.

I often seatrch binaries and hex files for certain strings, thsi Vista
    search is a disaster.

  2. Degreed engineer.

Doesn't know sentence structure or paragraphs! Can't implement spell check.

Where did you get your degree? University of the street?

Search is fine for me. All I did was tweak it so it looked in the locations
I wanted it to look in. Being an engineer you, of course, know that this
    must be done.

Then again, many people I met at Bell Labs were functionally stupid. They
couldn't even turn on a copy machine if it was off. They had to call a
secretary (baby sitter) to do it for them.

I agree with you...and still use XP and not Vista.

However , at the beginning of the year I switched over to Linux for most of
    my work.

You may want to give it a try too

That would verify that he's an engineer. Apparently you don't work
    with many.

Vista search is the most convoluted, worthless POS MS has ever
    "designed" (note the quotes).

There's a difference between "difficulty communicating" and "stupid".
Perhaps you're ignorant of the difference. (Psst - there's also a
difference between ignorant and stupid, you may need to look that up
    first).

Let me make two valid suggestions:
    1) become a Microsoft beta tester if you want to influence their software.
    2) if you don't like MS then use something else. It is your choice and
there are many choices out there.

  10. I did Suse Linux, backed by a serious busienss - Novell.
My problem is majority of users now are home users, teenagers, etc who
unfortunately have overtaken Microsoft with their "playful" interest.

This makes it a world's dominant OS. It's very difficult to insist on Linux
when much of the world was force dinto Windows, such as drivers, GUI, etc
    problems.
I can't come to a workplace and force everyone to switch to a "real"
    functional OS.

So like most i am forced into Windows, but I influenced several big
companies to change their products, which has nothing todo with software,
and I hope by wiritng to MS they may slightly change Windows7

If you see Appalachian or some other Spring water bottles made from PETE
plastic and not HDPE, it's because I wrote several times to their corporate
parents - Nestle Corp of Switzerland. They listened! I can't believe they
agreed with my emals, it felt great. HDPE produces a cancer-causing agent
in its manufacturing by-product, while PETE seems to be the safest
    alternative.
PETE is costlies, that's why many cheap water companies resort to that
    semi-toxic material.
America is a great country, because manufacturers may sometime slisten to
your wishes, so I can't insist on Linux.

I have to live with Windows and try to modify it by keepin gin touch with
    their development team.

  11. I've researched the matter and it's NOT because I need to learn Vista
search. I am a pretty smart guy.
What we need is to FORGET it when it comes to serious search within file
    CONTENTS.

First off, waiting for a search to go thru tedious filename search, JUST
because it"s impossible to INITIATE CONTENTS SEARCH BEFORE FILENAME is DONE
    is RETARDED & TIME CONSUMING.
You could start Contents search immediately in WinXP.
Second, I ceated 4 test files, Vista found one. XP found all 4. They
contained an ASCII string within txt, log, ipt and doc files.
Don't worry about IPT files, it's a 3D MCAD files, you probably never heard
    of.
WinXP doesn't care, it just finds it. I don't mind waiting, listen if you
get tired waiting get a better computer.
Don'tr try to circumvent quality search and call it "Vista" just because it
finished quick, and found no sh....

    And the solution is here:
    MYTHICSOFT's "FILE LOCATOR PRO"
It costs a few dollars, they also let you download stripped down free
version AgentRansack but its development stopped in 2003.

This company's clients include FBI, CIA, US Dept of Defense, many Scientific
    institutions.
It actually does search file's contents, unlike Vista's empty claims.

Dont tell I haven't enetered query strings properly, i told you don't know
who I am. It's too long to explain, I've been doing it longer than you've
    been alive.

  12. Also Indexing is not a solution.
Indexing is off and shall remain off on my computers forever.
This is been the case in WinXP and search worked perfectly, indexing
disrupts datalogs egenerated by our scientific insutrments at the company i
work for, indexing is also not welcome on my home computers as I always kill
memory hogues and nonessential processes after buying a new commputer (which
nowadays come loaded with trial/bloat/crapware like games and players).

So I set Visat search to search w/o relying on Indexing. it doesn't change
    anything, it still fails.

Solution is Mythicsoft "File Locator Pro".
Everything has to be bought now for this stupid Operating System

  13. Mark,

I've read your entire rant, but I won't be buying Mythicsoft no matter how
hard you have tried to push it.

I work on both Vista and XP machines daily. Give me the Vista search on an
    indexed system any time.

  14. Richard Urban (University of the Streets?),

My friend, sometimes stupidity does not warrant an answer but I will make an
    exception:
I SAID I CONFIGURED IT TO LOOK INA CERTAIN FOLDER OK?? Did I say I 've been
doing computers and Vista long enough to learn things, especially for
someone with PhD in Electronics Engineering?

    Get this:
Vista search is a piece of you know what, and our company is now using
    FileLocator pro made by Mythicsoft.
    End of conversation.

I just wanted to deliver facts to this Public Newgroups.

  15. You're hired by MS to do what you do ewally well, that is promoting an
    inferior Search algorithm.

I've logged your name and will never care to check out your answers folrm
    now on.
I told you this Search is flawed and you can pray jesus but he won't help to
    change this fact

  16. Search is fine for you?

I can send you a hexadecimal file or hash, and include a string there "thou
shalt not Vista", and se eif you find it by file contents, name that file
something like "Vista Enterpirse is for kids.txt"
Then create 4 variations of this file placing strings at random location, i
wish you luck finding that file.

I often look for things in ALL KINDS of files, not just pictures, music, and
other crap that Operatign System seems to cater to recently.
WHo cares about videocameras and DVD players on a computer meant for
    busienss?

What are you finding there with this flawed search tool Sir?
Do you want us to remind you what happened in WindowsXP when we claimed it
wouldn't search an arbitrary filetype back in early 200's? You were runnign
around to convince people were conducting searches "improperly" or do not
even desreve such ability, and have to buy 3d party tools.
Then suddenly a Registry tweak came out, so you admitted it was a problem!!

You jus twant to SELL CRAP, and mask eprofits!

    True enough.
Though I think many Windows users could use Linux if they gave it half a
chance...it's true the most people would never make the switch...so I've
never tried to force any of my friends to try it.

My biggest complaint with Vista wasn't so much that I could not get it
to work...it just seemed like it was a step down from XP.
    No advantages, but worse performance.

Considering that I was still using Win2k as my main operating system
until this year...I am sure that I will be using XP for many years to
come...probably long after Vista has become obsolete.

However, at least for me, I've found that except for the occasional time
where I need to use Publisher (and I have to run it natively) Linux does
the job for me and I can find an application equivalent or better than
    what's available for Windows.

    Good for you!

I used to write a lot of letters myself and am surprised that
occasionally someone will actually listen. I've found out that the more
important the person you write to is...the more likely you'll actually
get a reply. It's the little piss-ants who *think* they are important...
that are most likely to think they are too big to bother to respond.

I've found that sometimes my typos are more meaningful than what I had

All that you said is 100% correct and like a fellow intelligent human,
we have come to the exact same conclusions and observations.

You are right and just ignore these retarder naysayers who insist otherwise.

I have posted facts, proof and argued with many of these stupid vista
fanbois, but it doesnt matter how much you try, they close their ears
and continue insisting that vista is great...

Take for example Frank who has posted in your thread, he is a good

He loves vista, and has no brain whatsoever.

He is not employed by the company and we shall thank God for that. Many but
not all MVPs are the company's *small* partners and some of them mistakenly
believe that they work for their supplier (that is, Microsoft in this case)
rather than their "customers" simply because their supplier's business size
is much larger than their own.

They think that it's their supplier, not their current/potential customers,
that are generating revenues for them.

They do whatever to protect their supplier including blind defense and
    misleading information in some cases.

If they were actually employed by the company, MS would have filed chapter
11 by now and Windows will become another Linux distro with their thought
    process.

Don't ever walk into a store who labeled themselves as a close partner of
their supplier because it tells you that, we work for our supplier(s) not
    for you.
