    Hey

I have a laptop running windows vista home premium 32bit. I've been
having trouble with freezing problems where everything will freeze up
except my mouse. I can move the mouse pointer around but i can't click
on anything and bringing up the task manager using ctrl-alt-delete or
ctrl-shift-escape doesn't work either. I have to do a forced shut down.

This happens at random times. I could be browsing the internet, word
processing, listening to music, or anything. It happens both on a clean
vista install and regular manufacturer (sony) os. I have all the
    updated drivers.

    What could be the problem?

NTFS file system errors/bad disk sectors
    System file integrity issues
    corruption
    fragmentation
    Bad Memory (RAM)
    Malware
    Fragmentation

try _check_disk_ for file system errors and scan for attempt repair of
    bad sectors,

Run an elevated command and copy/paste this:
    *sfc /scannow*

Run the memory diagnostic, and then try the following elevated command:
    *defrag c: -w*

Then run the following online malware scanner/cleaners:
    '_*ESET_NOD32_Online_Scanner*_' (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/)
    'Symantec/Norton scan'
    '_Kaspersky_Virus_Scanner_' (http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner)

Maybe it will help you. What do you have to loose by trying it?

Your description of the problem indicates hardware failure. You can do some
    hardware troubleshooting yourself:

Or (especially if the machine is still under warranty), contact the laptop
    mftr.'s tech support for repair/replacement.

So i tried the chkdsk. I don't think it found anything. I also tried
the sfc /scannow. I dont' think it found anything. I disabled the
search index and it seems to have gone down. However it still happens.
    Especially when a program freezes i can't ctrl-alt-delete or
ctrl-shift-escape it. Bringing up the task manager only works when no
    program is freezing.

*Have you done a full memory diagnostic- you may have bad RAM.*

in start search, type memory, then click "Memory Diagnostic tool"

You may also have severe fragmentation, This will result in slow
performance "freeze ups" Run the memory diagnostic, if it says your
memory is good, then try this:
