Ah yes - the final resort of the loser - personal insults rather than
    logical argument.

Yes, it imports and exports Microsoft Office files, and yes, it will
usually render them very similarly to the way Microsoft Office does.
But its compatibility is *not* 100%.

Is that lack of complete compatibility a problem for everyone? No,
it's not, and Open Office is good choice for many people.

But it's not a good choice for everyone. Because it's free, someone
who finds it satisfactory may be able to save a significant amount of
money by using Office, but it makes almost no sense for someone who
already owns Microsoft Office (and since Doug asks if he can run it,
he presumably already owns it) to run Open Office instead.

And Doug, to answer your question, yes, you run Office 2003 on 64-bit
    Vista Home Premium.

Mr. Arnold - I have never tried to ram anything down anyone's throat. I
suggested to the OP that he might want to 'investigate' OpenOffice to see
if it would meet his needs. The entire point of the Open Source movement
is CHOICE. If it were not there we would have a lot less choice.

If you equate suggestions that one investigate alternatives to 'ramming
down people's throats' then I'm sorry for you. That, IMHO, is a very
    convoluted view of things.

OP did not say he owned it. Fair chance he has a line on a discounted
copy. If he already owns it, then go for it. I did not say or imply that
OpenOffice was the perfect solution for everyone - but, as you admit, a
lot of folks could save a lot of money by trying it for free.

It didn't work. It's plain and simple it didn't work. If I ask something
to do something, it doesn't do it, it doesn't do it correctly or
consistently, then I don't need the thing on any computer I use .. period.

No one has to explain anything to him. Who does he think he is? No one
has to answer to him about anything.

It's typical COLA nonsense, as he pole dances one tune here, and then he
pole dances another tune in COLA.

Right; that's why all I said was "presumably."

Yes, a chance. But my interpretation of his message was that he
    *probably* owns it.

"Admit" isn't the right word at all. Yes, I have no problem with
anyone trying it. To someone without such software, I *recommend*
trying it, rather than admitting it. I've said it here multiple times.

It's not my personal preference, because neither Word nor OO's Word
processor is what I like best. I'm a WordPerfect fan. But I have no
problem with anyone having a different opinion.

Sorry, Doug--a typo in that sentence. It should be "...you *can* run
    Office 2003..."

You'll have a tough time trying to find me bad-mouthing MS - I just don't
    do that.

Begs an interesting question: how would you KNOW that I and/or anyone
else frequented COLA if you did not yourself. So you're guilty of what
    you accuse me of!
