Transfer Fonts

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by rmo555@cox.net, Oct 9, 2009.

  1. I have fonts loaded on my Windows XP machine that I would like to
install on my new Vista machine also. Can someone tell me how to do
    this?

The easiest way is to copy all the .TTF fonts from the Windows\Fonts folder
on the XP machine to either a network drive or to a USB drive of some type
that will hold all the font files. You will need to set the computer to
show hidden and System folders to visible.

Double Click My Computer then single click Tools, Folder Options, View,
scroll down the list to 'Hidden files and folders' and click the button for
'Show hidden files and folders', Click the checkmark to turn off the 'Hide
extensions for known file types' and click the checkmark for 'Hide protected
operating system files'. When the last one is clicked a warning message
will appear. Answer Yes to you want to show the files. Click OK.

Using My Computer, click on Windows\Fonts and then the type column to allow
the computer to sort by file type. Highlight the first TTF font by single
clicking. Scroll all the way down to the last TTF file and hold the Shift
key while single clicking on that file. Right click on any of the files and
then left click Copy. Go to the USB or network drive and Right click on the
drive and left click on Paste. The files will copy.

On the Vista machine, set to visible also (Computer, Tools, Folder Options,
View) and simply copy from the USB or network drive to the Windows\Fonts
folder. This will automatically install all non-existent fonts and will ask
if you want to overwrite any fonts already there. DO NOT overwrite any
Vista fonts. Can be an involved process but it is really easy.

Hope this helps, let us know.

Copying only the .TTF files may mean that .PFM (Adobe) fonts wouldn't be
    migrated to the new computer.

Yes that would be true but do you not have to install the Adobe drivers
(ATM) or programs to use their fonts. You also would not copy the companion
PFB files for the Adobe products. And if the program is installed, the
fonts should automatically be installed. Adobe is a stickler about "font
piracy," at least the last time I used one of their programs that used Type
    1 fonts.

This is a little foreign to me. What drivers do I have to install?

It would be an Adobe program such as Adobe CS or some other program that
would use Adobe type 1 fonts. It isn't necessary to transfer the fonts
unless you have the companion program to go with them.
