taskbar minimized programs missing

On one of my computers, running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, I
    recently encountered a weired situation:

The taskbar does not show any of the programs running. I can still
    switch between them using Alt-Tab.

Only when I right-click the taskbar, and run the task manager, the
    programs re-appear on the taskbar.

    Any idea?

    Thanks.

Is the taskbar minimized to a "zero" width & "locked" by any chance?
See if you can actually see its width is at least 1 row, if unlocked you can
    expand width...
then right-click on it and select 'properties"-->click on 'taskbar"
Check all settings, if all make sense.

If no luck, I have no clue what else can cause this problem, wait for more
    responses
