    Hi,
I have two xp pro machines and a vista home premium machine and a ubuntu
    laptop.

I am trying to make my private network 100% joined. They are in my own
workgroup (joehome) and all sit under that but thats as far as i seem to get.
I cant connect to the vista machine under the workgroup from xp because it
keeps asking for a username and password which is annoying but isn't a
problem in itself because i know it and enter it, however it doesn't
recognize the username and password even though its correct.

This may also affect the following, i have shared all my media with each of
the pcs by going to windows media player and going to sharing media.

However not all the pcs show up in the list of pcs to share media with
either. One of the xp machines show up on the vista but not the other, and my
vista shows up on one of the xp but not the other.

Same with remote desktop, i can connect to both xp machines via vista but
    cannot connect to vista remotley.

Thanks in adv for any help because i have no idea way they dont connect, ive
seem to have selected everything i need to.

It really helps to have a common Username/Password on all the machines -
    this helps with shares.

You should enable Network sharing, and make the required folders shared.
(This is not the same as enabling sharing in windows media player).

Do any of the networked machines show up in FileExplorer?

Ubuntu will have to use Samba to do shareing with Windows.
