System restore failed?

    I went and bought another hard drive and used the built in backup on Vista
    and backup on another drive. The original C:\ has a 75 gig partition and I
    back it up on a partitioned 1TB drive. I partition it for 100 gigs and 900
    gigs. I back up on the 900 gig partition and tried to restore it on the 100
    gig partition and it failed. This happen to me about 2 years ago and I
    forgot how I fix this. Could someone please help me.
