    Hi There,

I want to be able to stop users being able to change the auto-hide
setting of the taskbar on a windows vista machine.

Anyone any ideas how to do this?

I want it to be set to always auto-hide so the solution either wants
to stop the user being able to change this or maybe as a second
solution if they do change it then i want it to be reset when the
    machine is rebooted.

    Ideas Welcome.

    Regards

    Jamie

    Establish a group policy...

**1.Type “gpedit.msc” in the Vista Start Menu or in the Run
dialog box to open Group Policy Editor.
2.Click “Continue” for the UAC prompt.
    3.Go to User Configuration/ Administrative Templates/ Start Menu/
    Taskbar.
4.In the right side pane, locate the option called “Lock the
    Taskbar”.
5.Right click on “Lock the Taskbar” and select
    “Properties”.
6.Select “Enabled” to to enalbe “Lock the
Taskbar” and “Disabled” to disable the option.
7.Click “Apply” and close the Group Policy Editor.

If your version of Vista can run the Group Policy Editor you
can make several restrictions to the taskbar.

    Start > Run > type in ' gpedit.msc '.
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

That particular setting is no good for the OP's problem.
Quote from the 'Lock the Taskbar' properties:

"If you enable this setting it prevents the user from moving
or resizing the taskbar. While the taskbar is locked, auto-hide
and other taskbar options are still available in taskbar properties."

Sorry, no clicking on your *REP* icon this time.

I read this and I long for the days where they gave you CDs, you load it up
and customize it how you feel like. No annal admin restricting stuff
    because he can.

Thanks for your responses, i'll take a look into group policy and see
if i can get what i want but from reading it appears that this wont be
    the case.

Canuck57: - The reason for needing to restrict this is due to having a
full screen application running on startup that requires the startmenu
to be hidden so i doesn't appear on the screen. I then have other
users who use the same laptop but close the application down to use
the laptop normally. They keep changing the start menu to not auto
hide and then when the first users (who are not as experienced) switch
the laptop on their full screen application which starts on startup
has the start menu showing again and they don't know how to change it
    back.
