The downloads of the updates get to about 49% then seem to stop there and remain at 49%. While there is no more cursor spinning, I seem to be having trouble with the updates now.

On some computers when updates are running and you try to do other things it will bog it it down. I do believe that as I mentioned it is a memory problem with your laptop. If you are running windows update I would just let it alone and don't try to run anything else till it was finished. Running a video and the updates running I believe over taxed your memory. You could open your task manger and see what is maxing out your memory when updates are running. To open the task manger right click on the task bar and select task manger. You will see CPU,memory, disk at the top it will give you the percentage that is being used. That will give you some idea of what is going on.

Oh Tony, that is going to be a risky undertaking. The only drive I have to use is the ext drive and it is nearly full. I would lose a lot of my content. What if I did a clean installation of Windows from Recovery? That allows me to keep my files intact. Otherwise, I have no where else to put them.

What IJAC said - let it install the updates without anything else running.

The clean install of Windows from Recovery will wipe out any applications and settings you installed. I'd stay away from that if you can. If you use the Media Creation tool, a 16 GB flash drive will work nicely. You load the ISO onto the flash drive. Boot to Windows as you normally do. Then insert the flash drive and open the setup file on that drive. Follow the prompts.

I don't have a flash drive Tony but I do have a blank cd or two I could put the Tool on to boot from. Think that would work?
I don't know how big the tool is but if I also deleted it from my external drive after I make the cd, I might have more room for my data there?

I borrowed a big usb flashdrive and downloaded the Media Creation Tool to it. But upon booting this pc does not give me the option to go into bios and change the boot order so it continues to boot from the internal hard drive. With other pcs I have had I was always able to go into bios after a reboot. I tried f12 which was the hot key on another pc I had but that does nothing. So then I went into the usb and tried to run the tool from there but of course that would not work.

I finallt figured out that the hot key is f2 to get into bios. I changed the boot order to usb/cd and saved. The pc still would not boot from the usb. I went back in and changed the order to usb/hdd and tried again. Still no luck. Then I re-downloaded the creatopn tool and started over and I changed ports for the usb twice but still the pc will not boot up from the usb. I must have rebooted eight times or more. Have no idea what I am doing wrong. I hit f10 to save each time I made a change.

Great that you picked up a flash drive. No worries. Go back to post #25

With regard to the memory, I removed as much stuff from the F drive as possile and put it on the Ext drive. Now will this free up enough memory for apps to run better or do I need to do something with that F drive partition I made?

So you were not telling me to "boot" from the usb but run the program instead. It's just that I was trying to "boot" the pc from the usb and that was the problem. Windows is now downloding.

Here we go again. All day yesterday was spent updating Windows. At first all worked fine. But, this morning when i turned it on and tried to bring up Firefox, everything frooze up. Nothing worked so I did another hard boot. When it came back to life it was doing updates. Then, when I tried to pull up the file explorer from the task bar, the cursor started spinning. Now, after 15 minutes file explorer actually pulled up. Now it is stuck and spinning again in file explorer so i will hsve to do another hard boot. Beats me.
So now it came back to life and I did a restart. The task bar is very slow to start. Google Chrome won't minimize. Will try for a while and see what happens. Jeez, so much Drama.

I agree with IJAC my problem is apparently with memory. When my pc freezes up and I have to reboot,, the system is usually handling updates at the time. Since I can't get a memory upgrade, would changing the partition I made earlier to the hard drive creating the F drive make a difference? If so, how do I go about doing that? Thanks.

No it won't make a difference, memory is different than hard drive space. You may also want to download this : http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php to check your temperatures. It is called speed fan it is not as accurate as the bios temp readings but it can give you some idea of what the temps are. I still think it is memory though.

I use the "Core Temp" program.
I deleted a few old movies that I didn't want so this is where the memory stands now. There is 553 GB free at this point. My concern is that this is enough free space for updates so the pc won't slow don't too much? I could get another 33 GB about if I deleted windows.old. I know that after a certain time win.old will be deleted anyway so I'm not sure it's necessary to help it along. What do you think? Thanks.

You definitely have more than enough free space, Dave.
    I don't think that is a problem.

I remember that you are somewhere in the Philippines'.
Do you have spotty or slow internet where you are located?

Yes, sometimes. Although it is the fastest available here. This morning when I turned my pc on updates were there so I had to restart the pc but had no problems at all and the updates were done quickly with no slowdowns or problems. I realize that slow internet speed can have a lot to do with the updates. Thanks again for all the help and advice. I am not quite computer savvy enough to grasp the difference between RAM and disk space but even at 75, I am learning. There is no way to increase RAM without an upgrade? No, didn't think so.
Take care and have a great day. (Vote in November).

Well the disk space refers to the amount of space on your hard drive. If your hard drive fills up it will slow down but as Cindy said that is not your problem. Memory is what is being used after the computer boots up. All your apps and programs run in memory you said you have 4 GB of memory. That is the minimum that windows 10 will run reasonably well. I understand you are not able to purchase more memory due to no credit card so you will need to let updates run and nothing else till they are done. I know this has to be frustrating for you but computer manufacturers usually only put the minimum in to cut costs for them. We are here to help in any way so if you need to ask more questions feel free any time.

I did some research on this and I found "ready boost" that I can use to speed up my RAM by using the memory stick as extra ram, 16MB. Since I have a lot of disk space would it not be beneficial for me to transfer my files from my stick to the hard drive and let windows use the ReadyBoost function when it is needed? I realize that the stick is only 16MB but that would be a help. What do you think? It's a shame ReadyBoost isn't available for my ext hard drive, which would add a lot of RAM. Thanks
