    Hello:

We downloaded SP1 and now there is an X over the speaker icon in the tray. I
went to Control Panel and nothing is showing under the Playback tab. Does
anyone know how to get the sound back on our laptop? Thank you.

    Should I download this instead?

Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five
    Language Standalone (KB948465)

You should install SP2 anyway but it needs to have SP1 installed first
so you need both and then instal them in correct order.

    Sorry, I was joking.
I don't really know why SP1 disabled your audio.

Maybe you could try ControlPanel-->System-->DeviceManager, right-click on
audio devices - all of them, wherever you can find "driver" in rightclick
    menu.
Then click "uninstall", then click "rescan for hardware changes".

When Audio devices are rediscovered, Windows will attempt to load generic
drivers. If you dont like them, goto you raudoo manufacturer's websites and
download their specific drivers, unless Windows pwn driver is even newer,
which sometimes does happen. SOme manufacturers went bankrupt recently, and
Windows keep supporting those devices even better than origianl OEM

BUT in my case I got th ebest videodriver from my Video manufacturer's
website (NVidia), and NOT from Hp who made my laptop, NOT from Microsoft who
    made Windows.
This driver is shockingly beautiful. It;s also huge - 140MB. Back in
1990's the whole Operating System could be 8 times smaller than this driver
    alone, heheh.... how times changed.

  6. Do Not Listen 2 JEWboy's Advise, MSFT Will Discontinue Support 4 Service
Pack 0 Some Time Next Year. Install Service Pack One First, And Then Install
    Service Pack Two.

I had that happen on SP2 where the sound was lost after the install of
the SP. All I did was go to the Device Manager for the sound device,
told it to install the driver, and search the Web for the driver. It
found the driver and installed it with no problems.
