    After changing your sound scheme, try saving it ['Save as ..' button above
    sound selection area].

    Otherwise what does the 'yellow exclamation point' say (exact message)?

    If the sound file is corrupt no amount scans are going to report
    anything. If you can open the file in an audio editor you can try
    re-saving it. If you are trying to use a sound file that you added
    yourself it might be simpler to just acquire/try a different copy of the
    file.

    I'd first have a look in

    C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-shell-sounds_........

    for .wav files, specifically 'Windows Exclamation.wav'

    If you spot it then you could try copying it to the folder
    'C:\Windows\Media\'

    Sorry it was 'Start navigation' wasn't it...

    Try looking for 'Windows Navigation Start.wav' in subfolders of

    C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-internetexplorer_...........

    [IMG] did not work could it be that maybe my real player took over those file
    extensions and this causing the problem? if so would a simple re associate
    that file to windows media work?

    Quite possibly. If not then these are my registry setting for .wav files,
    which I think are default, and which you could compare with your own, or
    paste into a .reg file .....

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav]
    "PerceivedType"="audio"
    @="WMP11.AssocFile.WAV"
    "Content Type"="audio/wav"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\OpenWithProgIds]
    "soundrec"=hex(0):
    "WMP11.AssocFile.WAV"=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wav\PersistentHandler]
    @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

    I guess I could always set it at none and call it a day but would really
    like to try and see what could be causing the issue.
