My computer used to lock up if I was away from the computer too long. I
originally thought it was a problem with the hard drive and I ran HD Tune
hard drive scan. It didn't lock up during scans, so I used that for a while
to keep the computer for locking up when I was away from the keyboard.

I upgrade to Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit for a while and found a work
around. Take ownership of DfrgNtfs.exe and then rename it. I would not
call it a fix since now it can't defrag NTFS volumes in the background.

I eventually noticed that DfrgNtfs.exe running in the background and using
excessive amount of CPU time. So I renamed it and now my computer doesn't
lock up anymore when I'm gone from the computer for a while and come back.

    Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR motherboard
    Intel Q9550 Core2 Quad 2.83Ghz
    4GB DDR2-1066

Western Digital 500GB Caviar Green x2 (RAID 0)
    Zotac Nvidia Geforce GTX 295

Couldn't you have just told defrag not to run?

Easier renaming DfrgNtfs.exe than tracking down all the defrag menu options.
