I understand sidebar will start in Vista only some gadgets not
    displayed corectly.Right?
    check font size (DPI)

Right click on desktop>>Personalize>>Adjust font size and restore to 96
(if you have unlikely) +restart sidebar

if no help try advices from below:

I suspect in this exist problem.I know one person which also have
trouble with sidebar after installing IE8,restoring default DPI help (I
think with installing SP2 may be similar problem),but you can't do
    this.
    Disabling non-default gadgets nothing change?
For experiment disable almost all gadget -only leave Slide Show gadget
and check this gadget will work fine.

Decided to try restoration of DPI. This worked but I can't read much as
it's too small. By the way my wallpaper on the logon page stopped
    working????
The Slide Show gadget kept working...

As I suspected :sleepy:. There are bugs both IE8 and SP2 and you can't
    nothing to do:
    You only have to choose:
    - leave default DPI
    - remove gadgets which not work correctly and cause problems
..and wait a while until MS will publish any hotfix for this.If you
want inform MS about this bug:'Microsoft Help and Support'

Remove wallpaper from logon page and again set wallpaper on logon page.
