I have an HP Pavilion series dv6000 laptop with Vista Home Premium running through a Linksys wireless router. Recently during my online sessions, it simply shuts off the power. If I use it on battery power alone, it works fine until the battery runs low. But if I try to recharge it and continue my session, sometimes it does the same thing. If it charges the battery fully, it also shuts off as soon as the battery is fully charged. I have also taken the battery out and tried running it on just the power cord and it also shuts off in a minute or so. I thought it may be the power cord adaptor so I replaced that yesterday and it still does it. It is the original battery and the laptop is about 5-6 years old. Any ideas? Thank you.

I assume the to your router and online sessions is a red herring and that this happens no matter what you are doing, correct.

It seems to me that the most obvious hardware issue may be as simple as a problem with the power input socket since you have ruled out the power adapter. Have you noticed whether the laptop is registering as being on AC power when it shuts off? Or is it showing as battery powered?

Yes, your assumtion is correct. Even if I am not online and it is on with just the desktop up and it goes off then as well.

I have not noticed whether it is on AC or battery when it does it. But when it is shut off, the power gets to the battery and is able to recharge it. I will look the next time and get back to you. Thanks very much.

    Hi,

I'm taking a stab in the dark here. Are you the only user on this computer ?
If not, perhaps power option settings have been changed without your knowledge ?

Here's the update and sorry for the delay. Since I began using a different adaptor (it came with a 65w and a 90w adaptor and I used the 65w) that came with the new power cord, it has only done it when the battery is fully charged, but not always. Today I had it plugged in and fully charged for over three hours at work with no problems. But when it does shut down the entire laptop keyboard goes dark and no lights are on the laptop at all except the little blue glow around the plug in port. Thanks!

Well my wife and I both use it, but to my knowledge the settings are what they were when we bought it. How could I check it? Thanks!

Go to Control Panel/Power Options. There should be three plans which can be customized.
