setup self-extractor has stopped working

    Hello

    I am trying to install AVG - and I get this message:

    AVG setup self-extractor based on 7-zip has stopped working.

    I cannot seem to be able to run any .exe files ... tried to install
    Spybot same thing ...

    downloaded 7-zip - same thing 'has stopped working'.

    I am not particuluarly technical so would appreciate any help.
