In the right hand pane of Windows Explorer I am now getting "summary"
descriptions in the right side pane. For example, when I am looking at
the Desktop, it has gathered the files as "A - H" and "I - P", etc.

I am using "classic Windows" folders. How can I shut off the
    summary/group description?

Right-click in a blank area of the right pane > Group by > (none).
