Recycle bin icon no longer works

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by Alex McFarlane, Oct 12, 2009.

  1. Dear Chums,

The recycle bin icon on my desktop has stopped working. Instead of the glass
filling up whenever I delete something and then emptying when I empty the
recycle bin, the glass remains resolutely empty. If I open the recycle bin
folder the deleted files are there. How do I restore functionality, please?

    Regards

See if either of these fixes by MVP Ramesh does the job:

Recycle Bin icon does not refresh automatically

    refresh-automatically.html

  3. Sadly none of the suggested fixes worked.

    Any further ideas, please?

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

If the First Question of Troubleshooting can't be satisfactorily answered
(and/or reversing whatever changed doesn't help) and the problem is very
recent (no older than a week), do a System Restore to when things worked.

To run System Restore, go to the Start Orb and in the Start Search box type
"System Restore" without the quotes. System Restore will appear in the
Programs result. Click on it, allow the UAC prompt, and follow the wizard.

Try this: Right click on the desktop > Personalize > Theme. Here you
change your theme from the current theme to another theme - and then you
change it back to your original theme. That trick has always worked for
me. I had the same situation a few times. "Theme" controls the recycle
    bin.
