Очень интересно. Я побывал в Петербурге (тогда еще Ленинграде) в 1987-м
    на экскурсии.

If you think about average salary in xUSSR (except for free and
democratic Baltic states) the regular retail price for Windows and
Office is a bit on the high side for them. Many people there earn less,
than an Office price, per month.

Been there, done that, do not want anymore :) But if anybody asks me,
this country goes the way of xUSSR with scaring acceleration.

  3. I'm too young to remember all those horrors of 80-s, but my parents (and
late grandparents) surely went through all of that. I am not a proponent
of the "3rd way" for Russia, I do not care at all - let those who stayed
there solve their problems themselves. Or, let Chinese teach them how to
    work in labor camps.

  6. Wonder why - in a country arguably richest in the world in terms of natural
    resources?
Oil - 2nd only to Saudi Arabia, Gas - largest deposits in the world, metals,
preciou stones, forests, one Baikal lake is like the largest freshwater body
    in the world!

Area - largest in the world, no serious enemies on the borders, educated
    people. Number one in Space.

What is the problem with MAKING MONEY?
    You kno what?

Russians lack management skills because it's a younger offspring of European
civilization. Even Christianity came to Russia approx a millenium afteer it
    was established in Western Europe.

But still a country which has a frightingly iron grasp on energy supply to
Europe, a country which along with satellites is 1/6 of the entire Earth's
land surface has to be given a slack for Office or Windows?
They better learn how to make money and get friendlier with USA & Western
Europe and stop playing 'we're special" games.
We're all Caucasian race, we come from the same stock, I can't stand anyone
of our fellow countrymen saying that we have a special, non-Western path.
    Somehow we're "better"

Hard fact is we're worse, if we couldn't produce toilet paper in 1970-1990
while I was there, and now they can't afford Windows?!
How come Britts with their abused, little piece of land from which almost
all resourced were sucked out by World War II, manage to make so much more
    money?
    Because they "developed", "evolved".
While some Russophiles insist on not following the West, because it's
    "rotten"

If West os rotting & decaying, then we must say - it's a beautiful decay!
Complete with 2 cars in my driveway, any hightech toy you need, travel (my
mom with her cheap Home Health Aide job was able to travel the world except
China!, would she be able to is she remained in Russia?) - I like this
    decay.
And when I walk out of the building people hold a door for me, I was first
struck by this in Czech Republic in 1993 when we were in transit from St.
Petersburg to New York as a permanent move, I thought "do I look nice or are
    the people too nice?"
Will never forget wiping my buuuutt with Newspapers in 1980's... you have to
jam it many times before it gets soft enough, but you still get toxic lead
    (plumbum) in your rectoom.
The primary food was bread p- bread for breakfast, bread for dinner, bread
for late night, bread with butter if you like luxury, mik, pork fat, salt,
some stinking fish that my cat refused to eat.
Pasta was hard to get, if you got Italian - you're lucky.
Bananas were like rubies, you;'d hunt them down and eat 2 banana with a
sense of great accomplishment because oyu might only have 2 bananas to
comprehend what people in other couytnries consider as dirt, costing 30
    cents/kilogram.

A car? Are you insane? What is the train & bus for then? And if you
insist on being weird, and driving your own coffin on wheels, do you have
time to repair it EVERY weekend - because Russian cars had a habit to break
    down on a schedule.

    Looky here Stan
I never bothered to reply to your posts because it was not worth it.
But now you got my goat up.
In 1944 I was interned in a camp by the Germans .In 1946 I was in Stalingrad. In 1953
I stood at attention while the music was blaring on the street on the death of
Stalin. I lived through the Hungarian revolution of 1956. I was in Korea and Vietnam
serving this country of ours which accepted me and my family so graciously. I did
not know what a toilet was until 1952. Went most of the times without eating because
there was no food in those days.

I do not complain , I live in a great country and what is in the past is in the
past. Period. Get on with your life and forget the past and stop posting the past
hardships. What was ,,,was. The year is 2009 and it is now.

    IMHO:

One big big problem Russians seem to have is that they are enamored with and
have romanticized alcohol. Russians drink too much. Too many people arrive
    at work hung over.

Alcohol is a progress killer. Tobacco and cigarettes are a drag. Smoking and
drinking addictions are a huge tax the Russian society pays. A tax that is
too high and holds Russia and Russians back. Red-eyed hung-over people are
not exactly going to be innovators (except in excuses and lies).

It's an uphill battle though, because drinking is probably highly
romanticized. People probably have many delusions surrounding alcohol and
its consumption. So the job is to convince them otherwise.

  10. You should see Finnish and Irish, they drink as much but quite successful.
It's due to climate - vodka helps to get thru frost & depressive snow
    fields.

I hate it, but then I am not Russian anyway - just born/raised there, not
Polish either - just a name..
You're probablky not serious., It's not vodka that afflicts them

Anyways, the subject was why Russo-China are allowed to pirate software,
also wht Britts pat more than us and Russians pay less than us and when we
will stop aiding countries who are richer than us in natural and land
resources so a century later we might be ki**ing their a**?
    Not a good plan, strategically.

I read some articles about the plague of alcoholism in the the former
U.S.S.R. and in Russia today. It's rampant. Something like 40+ % of the
workforce showed up hung-over on Monday morning. Hang-overs and innovation
don't make a pair unless discussing innovative excuse making.
