Telling someone to install a different OS isn't helping.
When they ask how to fix their car and you tell them to ride the bus, you're
    not helping.

Windows 7 does not come out tomorrow. It will be available to the general public
only on or about Oct 22nd. It goes out tomorrow to manufacture to the OEM's as so
they can start planning ahead for Oct 22nd

Yes, *full* and *upgrade* copies are not available until Oct. 7. If a member
of the general public wants to develop for / test / examine / tinker etc.
with the RTM version of Windows 7, they can purchase an MSDN or a Technet
subscription. With that they can download the operating system as an ISO and
burn it to DVD-r then install it. The license, though, differs from that of
an OEM copy in that the software is limited to the *single person*
    developing / coding / snooping / peeking / scripting / examining / testing /
sounding / measuring etc. etc. and not just as a general purpose
installation for the whole family or office.

    For example, the Technet License:

    [LICENSE TERMS FOR MICROSOFT SOFTWARE
MICROSOFT TECHNET PLUS AND TECHNET DIRECT SUBSCRIPTIONS - Technet]

If you can get a copy of a Windows OS before it's released for writing /
testing programs / drivers, the OS should come with a temporary license.
You should still have to purchase a full / upgrade version after the
    official release date.

Not true at all, is you are an MSDN subriber you can download it, (and
    get a key as well),

We have it installed on some of our test machines and nowhere does it

Ok, so I'm not familiar with this method. I figured it was more like the
Windows 7 RC which is free and temporary licensed.
I'm assuming with the MSDN path you have to pay for a subscription which
will cost at least as much as purchasing copies of Windows, or we'd all be
    subscribers.

It cost a lot more per year, but you get all the Microsoft products,
    (apart from games sadly [IMG]).

But if you add it all up I guess that the price per OS is a lot less.
And we get multiple license per users, (10 I think).

    Simon

Look into Technet as well - it's less expensive than MSDN. MSDN is developer
oriented whereas Technet is tech oriented. Both have many many Microsoft
products (e.g. Windows, MS-DOS, SQL Server, Office etc. etc.) for download,
but MSDN also includes developer tools such as Visual Studio.

Note the licensing of MSDN and Technet subscriptions. It is not a general
purpose license. It is also not a license for a machine, rather, for you, a
single individual. The idea is to give developers and techs access to a
wide range of Microsoft software at reasonable cost in order to do their
jobs. It is not meant as a software supply for the whole company or
household! It is also not meant to be used as "production" software. That
is, you may not run the copy of SQL Server you download as a Technet
subscriber to run the company's main database.

If you are "into" Windows and / or other Microsoft software and you want
access to a range of it, then an MSDN or Technet subscription is a very
inexpensive. The subscriptions make the software available for a year for
download, but the license per piece of software is perpetual, tied to you
and your use and not to the machine. On top of it, the subscription includes
a monthly magazine and includes several incident support sessions. You also
get answers to questions straight from Microsoft people should you post on
Microsoft newsgroups. To be honest with you, I think it is a very good deal.
I've had both, MSDN and Technet subscriptions and currently have a Technet
    subscription.
