I've been browsing around the net looking for a replacement to onecare's
registry cleaner when I found this thread. What everyone has said so far
has piqued my curiosity and a few has had me laughing in my seat. While
some of you know a bit or byte, maybe even some megabytes, about how,
why, and when to maintain the registry there are a few that see this
very normal act of maintainance see it as taboo and have so fervently
debated it as such. Much so to the point of fanaticism, which is what
    makes it so funny.

    Well, here's my two cents.
As a background on registry and to put it in simple (may be too simple)
    terms:
Window's registry is, as far as I know, where Microsoft and most, if
not all, programs put both essential and non-essential, system and
non-system settings and configurations. To a programmer or IT
manager/pro maintaining and tweaking the registry is a must. To a lay
man the registry is like an appendix; A lay may not know it is there and
when he's hurt he doesn't even know the problem may be there, but he
knows he's hurting somewhere in his body it's most likely near the
appendix. If the lay goes to a pro to have himself fixed the pro may
suggest such and such but if the problem is too big for the lay the pro,
like a surgeon, operates on the lay.

The source of this 'insight'? My own experience. I've seen enough
essentials and garbage inside the registry, but I've also seen enough
    problems caused by mis-managed registry.

However, like any sane person, no one wants to get fixed up by just
anybody. For all you know the person pretending to be the surgeon is
really a witch doctor who just babbles enough crap to sound a bit
convincing. If that's the case, then a registry cleanup software can and
will cause problems to your system. However, if the software is well
trained, educated, and quite respectable then, your problem with your
appendix will have just been like a nightmare to be forgotten in the
    course of time.

Do not touch the Registry with any type of Registry Tool that is automated. You are
    just looking for problems

This is what I believe. I've experienced what a registry cleaner can
destroy and never again will I use one.

How/what about a tool like Revo Uninstaller?
It removes Registry-entries which were linked to the apps that Revo
    removes...

I have used that too. It works quite well actually. But it still has
false positives. So I was constantly double checking what it thought was
a unneeded key. So if you do use Revo Uninstaller, double check what it
    thinks is a 'bad' key.
