But that's one of the great things about it. You probably use linux
several times a day and aren't even aware. It's in a large number of
devices and machines today as an embedded OS. Very transparent. And it
    just works.

I don't see much of it either but more than you. a couple of yrs ago,
when there still was Circuit City here (Albany, NY) I was looking at
laptops and told the sales clerk I regretted not bringing a 'live-cd'
along to test the machines' capability with Linux. he immediately offered
to look for _his_ Linux cd! floored me. he apparently was some kind of
    Gentoo type! _really_ floored me.

I notice the NYTimes technical section often responds to letters it
prints from people asking about computer problems with a reference to
whether the solution they are proposing works with Linux.

and magazine racks in Germany where I often visit have several glossy
Linux mags and some glossy os-agnostic rags which do Linux stories.

but most ordinary people (small college) I meet have barely heard of
Linux, let alone seen it. most students are unaware of it (here).

I think you're used to a different order of fields in the date. There is
that 03 in the middle and the 3 at the end (yeah, there's a 2 there too).

I do that sort of thing a lot, like the headline says "President rejects
new proposal" and at first I see it as "President rejects new
    prostitute"...

Oh well, it keeps me laughing...at myself.

When your glossy mags contain Linux, you really need to rush to the
hospital and get a geek reduction performed ASAP.

    Different......

    -Most are free.
    -Most s/w is free.
-Not as 'polished' looking as Windows. (Not necessarily true, depending
    on what you like.)
    -Operates differently than Windows.
-*Possibly* a good amount of command line work.
    - Not a lot of decent games. (Although Unreal Tournament3 ran better
using WINE on Linux than under native Windows.)

There isn't a huuuuuge selection of s/w. But there's at least one or two
fairly decent apps for each task.

You can look @ and see the top one or two titles
in each category. This is a great site to see what's available for Linux.

The major internet apps are available for Linux......Thunderbird,
Firefox, FileZilla, Trillian, Pan.....OK...what else is needed there ?

Check one or more out. Most popular distros have a 'live CD', which is a
bootable CD that will run the Linux OS from the CD without making any
    changes to your PC.
