Sometimes WMP can be annoying and do things like this, if you right click and select open with there will be some options, check that it is set to WMP and tick the always use this program to play this type of file.

I know you said that WMP is the default program, but the above procedure will make sure that it is set properly

Have you checked to make sure that .avi is checked in the file types found under tool>options in WMP? Also, what version of WMP are you using?

Clearly something or someone is fooling with your settings. Since I have no idea where these avi files are coming from, all I can suggest is that you be very careful of the source. If they are from a known and trusted source then I would suggest you do a thorough AV and Malware scans.

Glad that you got this problem sorted!:)

Its probably when NERO was installed it does ask you if you want to make it the default player and lists lots of extensions it can play.
Most people just uninstall and then have to do what you have :)

Glad all is ok now though

    Right in what way?

It does what its supposed to and does not take over my PC's resources to do it. With Nero you go and make a cup of tea, and when you return it's taken over 97% of the CPU Usage and is very reluctant to relinquish them back again.

Nero is also a pain to uninstall, I can't say as I have regretted ditching Nero in favour of Roxio, and I also can't say that I have had any problems with Roxio, unlike Nero that seemed to have a habit of crashing half way through burning a disk, and creating another coaster.

so what say you in defence of Nero?

I have not used Roxio for about 3 years, but back then it was clunky and not very refined and lacked advanced options.
In terms of the system crashing and ending up with coasters, thats more of a resource thing, if you have the RAM and HDD speeds to be able to keep up with Nero then nothing can match it (no pun intended :D)

I am more of a fan of programs like Alcohol 120% in all fairness.

Nero as with all other software does have its flawes, but I think over the years they have improved more than Roxio has

with Nero 6,7, and 8 I would agree but it all seemed to go wrong with Nero 9 and if 4 gig of ram, and a Sata HDD, and dual core CPU running at 3.1Ghz can't keep up with it then I don't think many people will have much more resource's and apart from upgrading to a quad core CPU their isn't much more in the worth while upgrades list to improve.

Match your system should easily run NERO, I know that there have been issues with the new installer that they use as there are so many versions to the new Nero 9

Yes this is what I too thought. It mat not have been a Nero Issue but could well have been a Vista registry Issue.

But after Uninstalling and re Installing a number of times downloading there Nero Cleaning tool I gave up on it and tried Roxio

After this little discussion I think that there is a good chance that if I had put Nero on after a clean install of Vista it just might have worked.

When I get another HDD :cryz: that I want to have for different OS partitions I just might try getting my Nero disk out and Loading it onto the Vista partition
