My ITunes library was created in XP and I have it stored on an
external USB drive, now that I have a vista machine. When I try to
sync it, I get messages to the effect that my computer is not ITunes
authorized even though it really is and it says it can't copy all of
    the files over.

  2. What does Apple have to say on this subject? You can't just move an ITunes
library around, there are specific processes to back
up/restore/export/import a library from one computer to another.

Actually you can. That's what I did when I got my latest laptop.
Installed iTunes, authorised the computer. Copied the iTunes Library
files to new laptop. Started iTunes, all music/video now available.
