Yesterday I was online according to all the signs/info from the icon down
near the clock. Somehow someone forgot to tell my system and I couldn't send
out or receive messages. Instead I was asked several times if I wanted to go
    online.
Is this something I have to learn to live with or can something be done in
my settings or whatever to stop it happening again?

Did you check the icon down near the clock to see if your connection was "local only" or "local and internet"?
Let us know, then you will get some help.

This can happen a number of ways. We'll need a lot more information to
know which way it happened. For example, it's quite possible you had a
temporary Internet outage. Or perhaps you were on wireless, and your
microwave oven knocked it out temporarily. Etc. Etc. Etc.
