I used to have a Network Icon in the RH Tray, with a blue mark to show
the Internet connection was up and running. All of a sudden it showed a
red cross, yet the internet connection was still OK. Yesterday the icon
disappeared altogether and I can't see how to get it back! It is not
    one of the hidden icons

Frenchy, Did you look on the taskbar configuration dialog
for the icons included in the tray - should be third tab.

    Hello Frenchy,
Just to make sure; right click on the open taskbar, choose properties,
at the top, click Notification area, is the NETWORK box checked ? I f
not, do so, then APPLY , OK.

Thanks for those that replied. Mysteriously, after a 2 day holiday, the
icon re-appeared and seems to be working fine!

I had gone to the Notification area before (when I posted this problem)
and that option was greyed out.

I had uninstalled and reinstalled the Network adapter. That did nothing.

I guess it is one of life's mysteries why it went bad and righted
itself! Now if I could only solve the http pictures not displaying, I
    would be a happy chappie!

For anyone else searching for the answer to this problem, Ramesh's
answer of disabling and then re-enabling the LAN connection worked for
me, even though my problem appeared to be with the dial-up icon and
connection being red-crossed. The LAN connection appeared (and was) ok,
but dial-up wasn't being shown at all (or in the Network and Sharing
    Centre.)

Good advice lingers longer! Thanks Ramesh!

Hmm - This is odd - Nothing has changed on my Vista PC - except perhaps
a recent MS Automatic update and yet I notice the same thing has
happened to me (so I googled it and came across your post)
    - Network icon shows a red cross but i am connected to the network that
it refers to - Disabling and re-enabling does not fix it. I just chose
to remove it from the taskbar altogether as it annoys the hell out of me
    - Think I shall go back to the Apple [IMG]
