I messed with it again for some time today. No luck.

I’ll give it that link a try tomorrow Seth.

Thanks, bad week for computers. We both had problem machines.

It doesn't look like you'll be able to activate the admin account unless you can get into regedit. If you can somehow, here's that method:

Does your Linux distro have a registry editor? I have a bootable W10 Tool kit that has a registry editor. I got it via online shareware.

Had to recreate the Install media to double check.

From the Install screen there should be Repair your computer (lower left)

    From there go under Troubleshoot

From there you can try Uninstall Updates or System Restore ETC

Rustys - thanks, but been there. System Restore said there were no restore points. It was unable to uninstall the latest feature update, but it did uninstall the latest quality update.
Startup Repair said it couldn't repair.

    Seth - Windows R doesn't work.

I've restored an image I took of the machine when it came in for W7 to W10 upgrade in February. (I usually make safety images and keep them for a while.) I then upgraded it again and did the updates. Also copied new/newer user files over to the drive. It's done.

Note: I also restored that image to another drive - just in case that chkdsk was missing something. Seems strange that it came in twice with this problem. Fortunately, the first time I was able to fix it with System Restore. Besides, it was a Seagate drive which I'm not a fan of.

Thanks everyone for hanging in there with me.

Since you updated the Feb image and those updates went through without a problem, then ya, it should be good.

I just found out that this happened after she let the machine go to sleep. When she came back to it a few hours later, the desktop wouldn't load.

Are you talking about the previous incident, or did it happen again after she got the computer back?

If the System File Checker reports issues it can’t fix, try the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command. The service runs three health checks, but only the last one can fix errors. Still, I recommend running all three.

    • In an open command window with admin privileges, enter Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth at the prompt.
This command will run for a bit and then report any issues it finds. You then go to the next command to check for Component Store corruption. (Again, neither CheckHealth nor ScanHealth actually fixes anything.)

    • In an open admin-level command window, enter Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth at the prompt.
The final command — RestoreHealth — does attempt to automatically repair issues it finds.

    • Enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth at an admin-level command prompt (see Figure 1).

Figure 1. In this screenshot, I’ve run four built-in tests to check Windows’ health.
If you get the problem again you could try this also. I've used it one time but can't remember if it worked or not I think it did. Wow I am getting old can't remember crap.

Thanks Clair, but no joy there either. When I tried to run DISM, it said it couldn't run in Windows PE. To get it to run, I booted to Troubleshooting > Command Prompt. From there I navigated to the System32 directory to run the program.

You never know when a thought will spark another thought and then it's fixed.
