Area Ideapad, Notebooks, etc the same as ordinary laptops or are they watered - down simpler devices with fewer features or less speeds? Not familiar with these terms or what limitations or cons they may have. Walmart had one Lenovo Ideapad and I plan to go to Best Buy to see a larger selection.

Here is an Asus. Wondered if I should be concerned with what it is called, or only the specs. Does it matter if it is called a ChromeBook or an IdeaPad, or need I only be concerned with price and features. I read Asus is likely preferred over Lenova but they are closely rated.
are USB 2.0 and 3.0 plugs and ports different? and if not can either be plugged into the other and have it work even if not same speed?

Personally when it comes to laptops, I prefer a smaller unit - one with a 14" display. Most 15.6" screen laptops come with a numeric keypad. Seems this one doesn't. That's a bit unusual. No big deal unless you're going to be entering numbers - as in spread sheets.

In the comments section, I see someone said this didn't come with an optical drive, but the photos show that it does.

The 8 GB memory is nice. It comes with only a 500 GB hard drive, but that's still more than you need. I didn't get the hard drive speed, but if it's 5400 rpm, you'd see a nice speed improvement by replacing it with a 7200 rpm or SSD drive. If speed isn't a consideration, don't worry about it.

I think at that price point, it's probably a fair deal. One thing I've seen on recent Lenovo laptops is that I don't like their trackpad. That's subjective. You may like it or if you're using a mouse, it won't matter.

I'm sure others here will post their own opinions.

Leaning toward Asus and havent really looked at detail but the one I listed has windows 8.1. seems a numeric keypad would be good if not necessary. All my PCs have one. Not sure not having windows 10 is a drawback. I have 7 and my brother has 8 or 8.1.

What causes this walmart page to freeze, not respond and jump all over the place when I go to it? Doesnt respond and jumps around until I get mad and close it. No other sites do this.

The first Asus is a good deal, especially for the price.
I would definitely stay away from the second one, it only has a Celeron processor.

The 1st one at $299.99 X555LA... looked like best one and reviews were mostly good. I am pretty much sold for looks like all I need. Do you think it best to get one at store instead of internet order in case something wrong or needs fixing or advice?

Conquered my worries and fears, decided best to get at store so any problems, questions, and returns/exchanges could be more easily dealt with, so I went down to Best Buy, and got the Asus X555LA-HI31103J @ 299.99.
Said it autodetects wireless and all I need do is enter network name and password. Took 50 minutes to accomplish.

What is involved in setting up a laptop anyway? Some sort of procedure or checklist? I think previous ones were set up at point of purchase. Know of any tutorials or is it simple to figure out?

Turn it on. Connect to your wireless network.
Get protected. They usually come with Norton or McAfee security products. I don't care for either. If you like what came with your laptop, keep it. If you're like most techs here, uninstall whatever came with it and install what you like. I like Emsisoft AntiMalware.

While you in Programs and Features, uninstall any other applications you don't want.
    Uninstall any toolbars.

Create restore disks. Your machine probably didn't come with restore disks. You have to make them. There should be a program that will create the restore disks. You typically need 2-4 DVDs.

I'd check to make sure the optical drive can read and write both CD's and DVD's.
Check the sound - can you change volume? Check the screen - can you vary the brightness?
    Check the mic.
Make sure System Restore is turned ON. Then create a restore point to make sure that works.

Check the Ethernet connection and all USB ports. Also HDMI if you have one on the computer.

Update Windows, Java, Flash and Adobe Reader.
    Update the browser.
Install an alternate browser such as Firefox, Chrome, and/or Safari.
I like to install Ad-Muncher, WinPatrol, and CryptoPrevent

That all that comes to mind right now.

also - if you use an email client, such as Windows Live Mail or even better, Thunderbird, you'll need to get that set up.

When in the 'Sign in to your Microsoft Account' window, choose 'Create a new account' near the bottom of the window. At the next window, click on 'Sign in without a Microsoft Account' also near the bottom of the window.

Actually I just entered "user" in the username box and left password blank. When I shut down and restarted it says USER ...Sign In.
I clicked SignIn and it opened. Does this sound right? To change account options it says I must enter password to go further and I didnt want to get deeper in so I just shut down. Would like to remove "user" instead of having an administrator account named user but dont know if it is possible. Any way to remove User and just have it open after it boots? Maybe clicking Sign In is the least it will allow?

18 years experience and 6 PCs, and 4 OS , open Asus, start, and dont know what to do...except dont have to sign in now. Dont know how to find folders, drives or play a CD. Dont these things come with at least an instructional CD? Previous came with several booklet. Have to go to library to see if have a windows 10 book.
Re: my last. No need to do anything with User. OK like it is. So far so good. Now to get through all the ads, registration, and offers that pop up. But happy with with PC and happy to have gotten it off the the plate.
