The bottom line is; it's personal preference....that's it, nothing more nothing less. If that's what one likes to do, than that's what one does. There's no right or wrong with it.

Yup! There's always the other side of the story. I personally would rather use the shut down mode. There have been lots of problems with windows sleep mode? I don't use the sleep mode. Different strokes for different fokes

Wait a minute Gary if you don't use sleep and you never turn it off does that mean it stays on all the time because that way few would agree with you especially on a laptop.
That address I could read but the message there is if you only use the computer once a day then shut if off when you are done. If you use it morning and evening then leave it on in power management and turn it off at night so that article doesn't really back your point.

Well! @Rich-M We just don't read that link the same way. I'm not trying to convince any member how to use their computer.
I never shut my Toshiba off. It's going on it's fifth year and that's about all anyone should expect a lap top to last.
Please copy and paste your last statement from the link I posted. I don't expect to win this discussion. Everyone should decide this for them selves. I'm just posting a different opinion. Here's the quote in the link I posted and it's not like the one you posted.
    The final word
“If you use your computer more than once a day, leave it on at least all day,” says Steven, “If you use it in the morning and at night, you can leave it on overnight as well. If you use your computer for only a few hours once a day, or less often, turn it off when you are done.”

There you have it. The answer depends on how you use your computer, and what you need it to do.

OK I guess I wasn't clear. Unless you have Power Options set to "always on", you are using sleep if you just close the lid or walk away leaving it on. If you are leaving them "always on" then you are putting more wear and tear that will harm your computer in the long run and few would disagree with that last statement.

@Rich-M I'm not disagreeing with anyone. Nor am I asking for anyone to agree with me. I simple posted a different opinion. My lap top sits on a desk. The lid is always open. I have it set to never sleep. I'm starting my 5th year with this lap top. The day it no longer works, I will come on CHF and tell you. I move my mouse and my PC is on! I'm not looking for a poll. This is how I have my rig set up!

We are not going to agree about this! We have our thoughts and neither of us is going to convince the other to change!
Don't mean to be a smart xxx but aren't you the one that was replacing HHd after they were a year old!:big_ha:

Many years ago turning om your computer could hurt things because of the power surge. With modern equipment that is no longer an issue. It all comes down to what a user prefers to do is all.

Hi @Amd_Man I have made my choice. This is a 50-50 discussion. I choose to leave my PC on 24/7.
When it bites the dust and goes to computer heaven. I'll be sure to let you all know my old Toshiba is now in heaven.
My Toshiba is going on 5 years old and I'm ready for a new one. I have made my opinion about this known. It has been fun, but like I said we will not convince each other who is right and who is wrong.;);)

These are the Windows applications that use the ESENT.dll.
    • Windows Update
    • Active Directory
    • Windows Desktop Search
    • Certification authority (CA)
    • Windows Internet Name Service (WINS)
    • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
    • Windows Live Mail
Its a core system file so i'd do the following
    1) Open a cmd window with admin privileges.
    2) Type sfc/ scannow and ENTER, if the scan finishes with "Found errors but could not fix all" then continue on
    3) Type dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth and ENTER (This may take 10-30mins) - If it says Can be repairable continue on.
    4) Type dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth and ENTER (This may take ~1hr depending on HDD speed) - If it says Can be repairable continue on.
    5) Type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and ENTER ( This may take +1hr depending on Internet connection)

sfc uses a compressed version of the ISO you can get from downloading Windows 10 to check against all the core dll files, however this is can be updated silently and become corrupt (Bravo MS), this checks the integrity of the package and fixes the corrupt portions.
After these steps are done, restart and run sfc /scannow again.

If restorehealth gives an error you need to mount the Windows 10 ISO/DVD and type the following
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /Source:wim:X:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess
Replace X with your DVD/ISO drive Letter.

Hi @Aus_Karlos Thanks friend. I have been there. I have no integrity violations or what ever it says after running sfc /scannow.
Good stuff however. Thanks! I have all the sync turned off. Will see what that does.
Thank you for your reply sir! I'm thinking W10 bug!

I wouldn't think an isolated case could be called a Windows10 bug.
    I could be wrong.:)

Hi @Aus_Karlos That is a great reply. Using your procedure to check windows files is a the best I have seen on a help forum.
I ran sfc /scannow and no integrity errors were found. I have read that sfc /scannow may have to be ran 3 times; if errors are found, before if can fix all corrupted files. Every thing I found on Google said the problem was in the Sync settings. I don't see any thing there that I need to sync, so I turned them all off. Will report back here if I get the error again.
    Thanks for your reply!
I did create a rescue drive and a repair CD for windows 10. I would suggest all W10 users do that. Having corrupted Windows files can cause a user all kinds of problems. Your reply needs to be made a sticky some where my friend. Excellent instructions on fixing Windows files. If you do all that and you you still have errors, I say it's time to reinstall your OS.

I have no errors; but if I had errors, I would have completed the rest of the suggested steps!
    Thank you sir!
