Hi GladEOlah. Your Son's friend has good advice.

You are installing a new Hard Drive, and installing Windows7 is a good move.

Won't be a big learning curve for you, as you currently have Vista.

The 2 OS are similar in many ways.

Agreed, Windows 7 is far superior. I am assuming that your vista machine is upgradeable to W7 and that your son's friend checked the specs. It is my understanding that most vista machines are OK for the upgrade although some of the earlier ones that were designed for XP but met Vista requirements may not be.

Have you saved all your important data? If not and you want to take a look I would still follow Allheart55's advice about freezing the old drive but instead of cloning it, purchase an adapter (often called a Hard Drive Caddy) and try viewing it as an external drive attached to a USB port. If it can be read, immediately copy all wanted files since it may not work twice.

Leave the drive in the freezer until you get the caddy and are ready to use it.

    Thank you DSTM.

And BeeCeeBee: No, unless the hard drive can be read I cannot save anything that was on there. Luckily I had not stored anything I could not replace from the 2 month ago crash. My son was able to retrieve it then and he placed it on the XP for storage (that comuputer is not used often and I was was very careful while I used it this past week). I have pictures that cannot be replaced. Also my poetry that I have written, some I do not have on paper yet, and the ones I do, would take a long time to place back on a document.

My knowledge of computers is not the greatest but I am learning. I really need to learn how to do back up on my stuff or at least learn to save it to another source.

I want to take a moment and express how much I like coming here to find answers to my questions and those of others. I find your site a good learning tool for computers and I really prefer to stay away from general chit chat as seen on other sites. (including my own in which I have your link posted if anyone has a problem with their computer they can come here to read).

I will try to frequent this site more often.....perhaps I may be able to help someone at some point in time.

If you were used to Vista, you shouldn't have much problems for ordinary use as a lot of Windows 7 is just an improved version of what was there in Vista. I hope you are pleasantly surprised with it.
