Missing Start button and Toolbar

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by blueteddygirl, Jun 26, 2009.

  1. My son is running Vista Home Premium on his laptop. Without any apparent
explanation, the start button and toolbar disappeared, leaving a blank
screen after logging on. Through investigation, I've managed to restore
these by typing Explorer.exe in the New file (task manager) and running
it, but when you log off, the same thing happens again - blank screen,
    no toolbar etc.

Has he corrupted a file somewhere or is it a consequence of a virus
etc? I've tried restoring to a previous date, but this doesn't help.

Can anyone come up with a solution?

If you feel OK using Regedit then you can check this key:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

In the right-pane there should be a value called ' Shell '
    and it's data should be ' explorer.exe '.
