The port on my new laptop is for headsets with mics. I currently have an altec lansing speaker connected and it works fine. The good news is I am off work until Wednesday so I have time to figure it out.....:)

So possibly your new computer will only work with an earphone/microphone headset that only has one plug. I have one of the above that works with my cell phone.

In the sound level box I do click on OK. It doesn't allow for the "apply". I've been doing a little research. I was going to buy a USB to 3.5mm adapter but learned the 3.5 is analog and uses my computrs sound card while the USB has it's own. Another issue is the 3.5 will not provide power for my usb mic. I will have to look into an actual headset that connects with the 3.5. May stop by the Geek Squad while shopping......

What is most confusing though is that even the built in mic on my new laptop times out after 30 seconds and mutes itself.

I believe the same issue will remain in whatever you buy.

I have researched at least 50 cases with the exact same problem, and in 90% of cases, the problem has been malware hidden in the registry.
The fix has been locate the malware and all works fine after that.
Many are saying Malwarebytes located the malware.
This was an interesting read, only one of many.

Before buying anything I would ask our Malware removal Expert (Starbuck) to check your computer, and at least remove that possibility.

SUCCESS.................sort of. I ran the malwarebytes on both laptop and desktop. The laptop now stays at whatever volume level I set it to and does not go mute on its own. No such luck on the desktop however. Not sure if it's due to it being W8 and the laptop W10. I will keep playing with it but at least I have the laptop working.........and with the usb mic. :)

That's good news. I read on a number of sites where Malwarebytes fixed the problem.
    One down, one to go.:)

Congratulations on solving your problems. Any idea what malware was causing the problem?

When I ran a scan it quarantined close to 100 items. My son seems to think it could be a free movie site I go to once in a while. My desktop had even more items. I have been checking my mic status all day and will monitor it after certain sites to see if it affects it. I will definitely keep all here posted.

    Hi LMiller

The scan results would be good to know for future reference.
If you don't mind posting the report that found and removed the items:
    MalwareBytes keeps the log reports....

    Restart MBAM
    • Click on the History tab >> Application Logs.
    • Double click on the scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan that showed the infections. (Not the Protection log )

      9a6e580fff9c8571a5ca63282bd36ecd.png
    • Click 'Copy to Clipboard'

    • Paste the contents of the clipboard into your reply.

    Many thanks.

I do not see a "history" tab on my Malware page. Let me see if I can look at the previous scan results.

If there is no 'History' tab ... then I take it that you have installed the new MalwareBytes V3.
    Does it look like this:

    a65e4951fcaaa60bb9b012b2f5fdc01a.png

If so, the reports tab is now stored on the left hand side.

Actually you have just pointed something out to me.
All our links to the V2 are now pointing to the new V3. (V2 is longer offered as a download)
So that means I now have to change all my canned download speeches :(
    Nice one MBAM

I think we may know what the cause was, but we'll wait for your MBAM report to confirm it.
