    Hello All,

I've been going crazy on this machine. It was brought to me by someone who
thought they had some "RedDwarf" virus. So I took a look at the machine.
Could not find any bugs spyware, virus or worms on the machine. I was able
to locate in the event log, that when they were trying to use thier 2wire
installation disk because they could not get online, a RedDwarf program
listed as being part of Motive Software... I belive they do the programming
for 2Wire. Anyway.... it was installed in compatiblity mode... after
rebooting the machine.. this is what happens...

When booting normally to the desktop.. desktop loads, AIM loads, no network
of any kind. Only a handfull of services start RPC, COM+, DCOM, SENS,
GroupPolicy, User Profile, Software Licensing, and a few more... and I mean
a few. No other services will start on the computer. I have used system
restore going back almost 2 months with the same effect. I can only get
programs to run in safe mode.. While the computer is in safe mode, every
thing that is supposed to work, works great. In normal boot, small 3rd part
apps will not run at all, run scanner, the vista setup dvd ( I would like to
perform a upgrade repair). When trying to start services I get the 1053
error that is not responding. I've checked directory security on the drive,
check disk, defender and Live One care would not start, disabled defender,
and used a manual removal tool in safe mode to remove One Care. Nothing is
being writen to the event log for why the services are not starting. The
only thing in the event log, is gp, sens, and system event can not handle a
notification. I have noticed that anything that seems to depend on DCOM
will not start, but it is started. Also the Windows Error Reporting Service
that is listed with no dependancys at all will also not start. And in
services.msc, the dependancys are only viewable in safe mode, in normal
mode, you can not veiw them, or make changes, startup type.. ect it goes
into not repsonding. IE will not launch, most programs just start then hang,

Ive ran checkdisk, no errors, sfc... no errors, memory test.. no erros..

Any ideas other than reinstall, also running installation packages are out,
as no access to windows installer.

    Thanks!

I had a co-worker bring her laptop into the office and she had some simular
problems. However, looking at her services at least 90% were not just not
running but disabled. Some could be re-enabled and started and some not.
The lady will take her system to a computer repair facility and let them try
to figure it out and probably re-install her system.

These are not disabled.. just won't start.. I was however able to boot via
diagnostic mode from msconfig and start any service I wanted manually. After
starting most of the essential services, ran msconfig with out reboot into
normal mode, then was able to start the upgrade/repair process... will find
out if it works here in a bit.

I have run into this problem twice. It seems to be something that I do
and not the hardware as it was two different computers.

Anyways... anything that used to require an Admin password now no
    longer works... it just hangs.

Also my network connection appears to be down but I am still connected.
I would love to hear what the solution is for this one because it
    always happens to me.

For anyone else that might be interested in helping with the problem
and can't scroll either, the original post is below. Basically, the
computer i have is doing the same things as Aarons . many services are
off and will not start, nothing new can be installed. works fine in
safemode but i can't find anything wrong. no serious spyware, no virus.

I haven't found any other online postings referring to these specific
problems and i cant find anything reddwarf related to this issue. trust
me, if i did i'd be using their forums instead of here.

Thanks in advance for your help

Now if you had posted this what you just did here then the computer would not have
flown out the window on the 10th floor.
Your post above did not have any info at all

From what you posted and just the Error 1053 is suggesting a clean reformat and
install. NO System Restore ,No nothing but a clean reformat and install

What does Error 1053 mean to you? to me its a timeout notice and does
not refer to any specific cause.

Ultimately, this may need a reinstall/reformat. For me thats the last
resort not the 1st. maybe this forum is the wrong place for expert
    advice.

i doubt pete is qualified to dispense advice on too many subjects...

    Hi, MrHat.

You posted on the Vistaheads forum, where you probably had to sign in, which
gave you a feeling of belonging and exclusivity - and maybe of a peek into
the Inner Sanctum. Vistaheads simply forwarded your post to the Microsoft
public news server, which is a part of the extremely non-exclusive Usenet,
and from which messages are "slurped" by other news servers and "forums" all
over the world. But Vistaheads did NOT forward the CONTEXT of your post, so
most worldwide readers did not know anything about the previous posts in the
    thread.

That's why Peter reacted as he did. That's why all of us who try to help
out in the Microsoft newsgroups get so frustrated and aggravated when we see
a NEW thread with a Subject line that starts with "Re: " and that contains
NO context whatsoever, but starts off with, "I'm having exactly the same
    problem.."

The poor suckers who thought they were posting to a private forum never even
know why we react as we do, because Vistaheads and other forum managers are
too busy raking in ad revenue from relaying questions and answers back and
forth to bother with explaining to their forum "members" just what they are
doing with the members' posts - and where they are getting the answers that
SEEM to come from other Vistaheads members. (I don't mean to pick on
Vistaheads; they are better than many others - but that is the one you
    used.)

If you'd like to cut out the middleman, just click here:

That click will fire up your default newsreader (WLM? OE? WM?
Third-party?), connect you to the MS public news servers, which are free and
do not require you to log in, and show you the 300 newest posts here
(including this thread, if you hurry before it scrolls off). Later you can
customize the news client in many ways to suit yourself.

Then you will see many of the disembodied "Re..Exactly the same problem..."
posts that we see and you might understand why we sometimes react out of
    frustration.

In any case, welcome to the newsgroup. ;<)

    Hi, Hats.

    No need to feel too bad. Lots of "forum" users have said much worse. :^}

And I probably overdid it a bit, too, now that I read that "poor suckers"
    crack.

Forums like Vistaheads perform a valuable service. But they also create
false impressions by not making clear to their members that many (most?) of
their answers come freely from outside the forum. And they create a LOT of
ill will by forwarding questions without including context so that the
forwarded question makes sense. That makes the innocent questioner look
foolish - and makes the uninformed reader of the question mad, thinking that
the lazy, foolish questioner left out the most important part of the
    question.

That's why I - and many others who come here volunteering to help - get so
frustrated when we see a disembodied question arrive because we know that
the headers for the message will say, "X-Newsreader: vBulletin USENET
gateway". It does no good for us to yell at you, because you didn't cause
the problem. But it's only human for us to yell at you, and it's only human
    for you to yell back.
