    Hello,
I have lost my vista product key, and need to reinstall OS.

Is there any way of getting your orginial product key, that came with
    the CD case?

Google Belarc Advisor. Install it, then run it. It should be able to find
    your key.

Yes, the case was damaged in moving, and then thrown away. I can get
the DVD media from a friend, but he will not let me use his product
key. Problem is the product key was with the case. Need to get my
product key before I reinstall Vista.

Just a thought.......log onto microsoft.com and do a search for "lost
product key".....doing so returns quite a number of hits which I don't
have time to wade through right now and so will leave that wonderful
task to your own personage. ;-)

you could try Magic Jellybean, it is free and works on my Vista and XP
    systems.

If you can still launch Vista even in Safe Mode, there's no problem. There
are plenty of utilities to uncover the key. If your system is an OEM
install, there's a COA sticker on the system with the key on it.

But if you've lost the DVD case, if there's no COA sticker on the system or
if you can't launch Vista, you're out of luck.

If you can slave the disk into another machine you can find the key with Jellybean.
With your target drive connected, open Magic Jellybean > Tools > Load Hive.
Browse to the Windows folder containing the wanted key.
