That's true. Vista is much more bloated than Linux.

However, out of the box, so to speak, Microsoft software already
includes most extra features. Trying to be all things for all people
causes bloat.

Open Source software is more likely to have fewer bells and whistles
from the get-go but more flexible customization options and plenty of
a-la-carte features and software to choose from.

IE8 is much more bloated and resource hogging than Firefox. Windows
Mail and Outlook Express are more bloated and resource hogging than
Thunderbird.

The real issue is choice and preference. What fills the needs of each
individual user? Each individual user must decide for themselves.

I still love Vista but I switched to Firefox, Thunderbird and Miranda.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Actually, the distro Mint comes with more than Vista out of the box like
Flash, Adobe Reader, Java, codecs, etc. Hardware drivers are installed
automagically without needing to go to the Net to get them or use a CD.

Chrome is really fast compared to both Firefox and IE.

I haven't tried Chrome because I'm not comfortable with anything Google
except the search engine. As a software developer, especially the
upcoming new OS, Google still has much to prove, IMHO. Experience takes
time, and I'm taking all the time I can get away with to learn at my own
slow pace.

On the other hand, when I get home pc #3 back up and running, I *might*
start testing Linux or Chrome in the future, as a hobby. *Maybe* ;-)

i guess Adobe Reader, Java and other basics I can download LATEST are
extremely important to be included with OS an dbe definitely OBSOLETE,
