Recovery may be loaded in a secret/separate partition too. this wouldn't need the use of a cd drive to work.

I believe that resetting to factory settings of thë best option in this situation. First back up all important files on an external source before proceeding.

all I have is a Dell resource CD (from my other computer that has Windows XP and this is a Toshiba).

Yes, I have it in safe mode because even less runs in normal mode... I can get a LITTLE bit further in safe mode.

I'm not sure how to get to BIOS no, F2 or 12 I think it is on this comp? I don't know honestly.

Personally Evan I think you need to be straight with us. A lot of people have been trying to help you but we only know a bit of the story.
No disks - Do you have a valid Windows Key, If you do for what operating system is it?
One messed up system - The more we read, the less we know.
This is where we are at now.

If Starbuck hadnt jumped in we would have known even less.
Post the model number of your Toshiba so we can look up if it has a build in recovery partition.
I think its safe to say what ever is on your computer, you will lose. But if you end up with a working computer then you should be happy.

By backing up to an external source I was thinking more along the lines of taking out your harddrive, connecting it to another machine and transferring your important files across. This would not need a working CD drive, and I wouldn't suggest backing up to a CD/DVD unless you don't have many important files.

I have made it a point to stay out of this because the more I read the more confused I get. Now that I have read the whole thing, I tend to agree with Alan on this one. There is just too much that we don't know.

Keep in mind that we are not the PC Police. We do not turn our members over to Bill Gates. :snckr: But we really can't help you if there is something that we should know and are not being told. In some instances we may need to withdraw support on a particular topic but even that is better than you getting advice that will never work. :)

I also can see where all this confusion is simply based on a lack of complete information and that there is really nothing at all to hide. BUT you may have to simply start from scratch and simply state any and every bit of pertinent information that you can think of.

I do agree that there may be a small amount of confusion and grey areas in this, but I don't think that a lack of a physical OS DVD with a laptop running Vista as stated is anything out of the ordinary.
The messed up system, is confusing as to what caused it, but that's what we're working to find out and resolve.

We just need to reel in the facts that we know and make this whole ongoing process easier to understand and move on with, which may in turn help to reveal any uncertainties.

Ok this is ALL that I know of this system....

1.It is a Toshiba Satellite p205-s6267 (what it says under the comp)
2.It is NOT an illegal copy of Vista, as there is a Vista home premium sticker right on the bottom of it.
3.A friend of my Fiance's Father was trying to fix another computer and ran out of memory... she does not know exactly what he did so maybe he tried somehow to use the laptop to fix the other computer? This was appoximately 5-8 months ago... she does not remember and we were not together at the time, so I don't know either.
    4. I have done only what Starbuck had suggested, as the computer wouldn't do anything else anyway. All I changed was the disable UAC and now I don't even remember how I did that, but I believe it is on the other thread, but it did enable me to be able to delete files without having to use a special program to do it.
    5. I have deleted files such as pictures and flipshare videos that my fiance had taken of her dogs, birds, cars, etc. The HD has a 110 GB capacity, when I started with it, it had 3.1 GB left... it now has 63.2 freespace.
    6. I do not know if the CD drive quit at the same time that the comp was worked on or not.

That is about all I know... I can give you some other numbers if they are needed on the bottom of the comp, but I do not know where the Vista disc is, or if there was one or just a recovery CD.

I really do not want anything I said or anything that Alan said to be construed as accusing anyone of anything. It is just a bit of a frustrating problem and we just want to rule out one possibility. I hope there was no offense taken.

to me? If so then no, I don't worry about that... I have a 6lb and 10lb sledgehammer and if the problem can't be solved, then one of them will be meeting this thing later :)

Have you tried Starbuck's instructions to get to the recovery partition? If you have and it wouldnt work then I think its time to talk to Toshiba for new recovery disks, there maybe a small charge involved.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the recovery disk is just the Toshiba drivers as far as I have read. It would be good if you can borrow a copy of Vista Home Premium and use your key thats located on the casing of your PC with it.

Which country do you live in? Let me know and I will post the correct link.

tried the recovery... I tried pressing F8, F1, and 0.... none of them brought up anything that worked. F8 brought up some recovery stuff, but it says I need the disc.

Did you follow the instructions I posted in your other active post?
If so, at which point did it ask for the disk?
