I just uninstalled the McAffee Security Center that came with my laptop
and installed AVG antivirus instead. Is there anything else I need to do
to complete the basic protection of my system?

    Welcome to this space...
Did you install the AVG free or the paid full version ?. Why did you
remove MCafee Security Center ??. No software can claim that it can
offer complete protection to your system from such threats but you have
to take some additional steps to protect yourself. Installing just an
anti virus will not do.Lemme know as what you do mostly while you are
online ? what type of internet connection have you got (Broadband /
    Dialup/Wireless).

    The AVG free.

Because the free subscription was about to expire, and because in the
past McAffee had charged me automatically $70 for a yearly subscription.

But I see that AVG free is not just antivirus.

    Dialup / wireless.

AVG free is a fairly good antivirus program and should suffice with your
browsing as long as you practice "safe-surfing." No antivirus program will
protect you if you do not practice safe-surfing. There are a lot of people
who also like Avast. In it's earlier versions, I had issues with updating on
two of my 5 computers and so dumped it for AVG which ran without problems.

You need to ensure that your Vista firewall is functioning. It, again will
normally be enough to protect from the hacker's attempts to infiltrate your
system. There are free firewalls available to replace the Vista one if you
    decide to go that route.
I use Zone Alarm from CheckPoint software:

on all my systems as it is free and it does a good job of blocking
outsiders. The only issue I have is the occasional failure of the program
to remember approved use of the intra or internet by some of my programs.

You also need to occasionally run mal-ware checkers. I use Spybot search
and destroy, Malware bytes and Ad-aware which can all be downloaded and
    installed from these sites:

There are others out there but again, be careful what you get and where you
    get it from.

I heartily agree that you need to uninstall McAfee as it, as well as
Norton's programs, are resource hogs. I have always had issues with McAfee
not finding malware that even AVG found.

  5. You forgot MalwareBytes and Spybot Search & Destory too!

    For a home user :

Avast Home - turn off unused shields.
    Windows Defender
    SmartScreen Filter (in IE8)
Run IE8 in Protected Mode and with InPrivate Filtering as the default
    (registry entry)
Prevx 3.0 Free (you can add this with AVG also)
UAC on or in Quiet Mode
    Windows Firewall
Set InPrivate Filtering at AUTO or Prompt and use the converted AdBlocker
    File.
Windows UpDates ON however set Advanced System Settings - Hardware Tab -
Windows Update Driver Settings - Never Check for Drivers when I connect a
Device (always go to a device makers site and manually look for updated
    drivers).

Even more secure would be to use InPrivate Browsing all the time.

The security built into Vista is so integrated that many programs just get
    in the way.

Use SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes as Scanners Only, nothing resident.
Though mine has never caught anything except an occasional cookie.

There are other scenarios however this one is extremely tight

I use(d) AVG with my Win 98 machine. Then with my Win XP laptop I
decided to keep McAffee, though now I think I shouldn't have. I also use
Firefox which is considered safer for browsing.

I'll get ad-aware, as in my earlier machines, for an occasional
check-up. It rarely caught anything but cookies. Except at some point in

I should have uninstalled McAfee from my Win XP machine too. I didn't
out of inertia and maybe curiosity with that map you were getting to see
from where they were trying to infiltrate, though I opened it only a
couple of times in the beginning... And I did realized it was slowing
down the system when it was scanning.

    Thanks,

There are several essential components to computer security: a
knowledgeable and pro-active user, a properly configured firewall,
reliable and up-to-date antivirus software, disable any unnecessary
services, and the prompt repair (via patches, hotfixes, or service
    packs) of any known vulnerabilities.

The most important component is also, not ironically, the weakest
link in the "equation," of course, the computer user. No software
manufacturer can -- nor should they be expected to -- protect the
computer user from him/herself. All too many people have bought into
the various PC/software manufacturers marketing claims of easy
computing. They believe that their computer should be no harder to use
than a toaster oven; they have neither the inclination or desire to
learn how to safely use their computer. All too few people keep their
antivirus software current, install patches in a timely manner, or stop
to really think about that cutesy link they're about to click.

Firewalls and anti-virus applications, which should always be used
and should always be running, are important components of "safe hex,"
but they cannot, and should not be expected to, protect the computer
user from him/herself. Ultimately, it is incumbent upon each and every
computer user to learn how to secure his/her own computer.

Good, but, make sure you run more than one malware checker because one does
not always find everything that may have gotten onto a system. That is why
I gave you the three web sites.

"Determine the status of your system's first 1056 ports" *

For example, my "TrueStealth Analysis" 10 minutes ago reads:

"Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single
packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a
result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused
to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint
of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on
the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their
users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing
themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very
    nice."

    *

Locate the Shields UP!! an click to follow the test.

I've used this site for years and there have been more than 84,126,316
    shields tested!

I learned plenty from the site, about ports and closing them.

Of course this does not mean I should not use all the methods
    mentioned here :))

I am having a problem with UAC since each time I click on FreshDownload
it wants me to approve it, and cannot tell it to remember my decision. I
hope the guys at FreshDevices will fix the problem. But what is Quiet Mode?

In my newsreader only the last message appears, one level down from my
original message. I am wondering what else I've been missing...

Anyway, when I was using my Win 98 machine I was thinking of trying
Linux with my next computer when I would have more hard drive space.

When, however, got my XP machine, I found it much more satisfactory, and
have been hesitating ever since to get involved with something that
would require me to spend extra time learning a new system when doing so
does not seem imperative. There are always new things to learn
concerning computers, languages and staff (html, css, javascript, new
programs...). Now first I still have to transfer to Java several (for
personal use) programs I have written in Qbasic starting from the early
90s which I still occasionally use and which now I cannot run in
Vista... And it would be a good idea to go through a book about OOo, to
which I finally switched from WP a couple of years ago. So trying Linux
will have to wait for some time in the indefinite future, or until for
    some reason it appears necessary.

Setting up /home is 3 more clicks.

    So, you got no names?
    Thought so.
Hard to get addresses for imaginary people.
