They made it query the index like a database.

 

I was able to customize and tweak around Vista gto make it look like WinXP.
Processing speed is now on par with XP if not faster.
As I said I can spend countless hours on computers and do it for a living,
so no problem with that.

I still insist that a number of issues can never be resolved and remain to
be either fixed by Windows7 or I'll start experimenting with Linux.

Such as Search, WinExplorer is now 90% like Vista, parts of its interface
are BETTER than WinXP, but folders forgetting their views and inability to
apply global view template are painful.
COlors are still messed up in some applications. Etc. etc, but at least I
am semi-happy tonight.

upgrade story happened as a result of reformatting disk drives after being
attacked by a special Chinese virus... long story
WinXP disk was discovered to have been lost, so I ran to a local store and
all they had were Vistas, too long to wait for shipping WinXP from Wev
sellers.

This is how my Vista story started, i am here by accident. I started using

I programmed WinExplorer to behave in an amazingly efficient way, opening
desired REAL folders imemdieatly, quick navigation, no mouse necessary.
The Search is a failure however. It finds music & pictures, and simple
filenames. try quering Binary files for random strings that WinXP easily
handled, .... impossibl ein Vista.

 

I know how to find things on the Web, my friend. That website is a copy of
Search's Help file. I know that.
Here's a fact however:

IT FAILS.

We tested multiple files, as simple as ASCII (plain Text) and it missed at
least 1/4 of files containing a test string.
It doesn't matter twhether it's *string, *string*, or string*, or type:*.txt
[teststring]

It just finds things that it likes to, not that actually exist.
I started with Internet in the age of Gopher, BBS, and Finger.
I don't need to be educated in Googling for answers, I KNOW how toy use
search as well as $35-60,000 CAD softwarre.
Engineer here.

It just fails with highly technical files, and this is what we use search
for. Not for music or pictures. Of Eord docs, I search for more complex
things that Win2000, WinXP, etc were finding, not with Vista. Vista's
search is FAST... and dumb!

Being able to use a CAD program calling yourself an engineer doesn't qualify
you as any kind of expert using a computer.

If you really were an engineer why do you have the need to tell the whole

Vista search algorithm fails with Search file contents for a test string.

More over, the MORONIC interface requires user to go thru shebang of search
by filename, only AFTER that you're allowed to do file contents search.
You don't think it's a moronic "improvement" over WindowsXP or a new
elaborate method to waste busienss user's time?

Whether you set "by filename only" or "both filename & contents), it still
goes thru tedious filenam search first.
It's very fast, and it misses targets.

It's like cheap Chnese AK47, there's a reason it costs $400 less than
Russian-made rfile. It's made for speed, not quality, and in the end the
speed is useless. As good as driving 90mph on 5th avenue in Manhattan, NY.
Stupid. Search doesn;t work for special quesries, but aside from that we
now have issues copying multiple (30-100) files totalling several
Gigabytes - progress bar i slying, "calculating tiem remaining" status
message is a circus (progressbar zooming left & right and warning me 17 days
remaining to copy 4GB), and sometimes hangs.
Filecopy over the Network is worse than suicide.

 

I create a query, for example:

type:*.txt teststring
type:*.txt *teststring
type:*.txt *teststring*
type:*.txt teststring*

And I let it run really long.

It persistently misses a few files at random, sometimes one, sometimes
another file is missed which I KNOW contaian that string.

repeat this in WidnowsXP and it finds all files.

Missing just one file can be catastrophic if you woirk for FBI, national
security, etc.
For this reason I am using MythicSoft 'FileLocatorPro", and in my entire
lifetime it's the first time I was forced to buy 3d party software for what
was a working part of Operating System... until Vista.

Also filecopy of multiple files totalling several Gigabytes is painful, and
buggy. Progress Bar is such a lying indicator that I must close my eyes to
avoid irritation.

In the 60s the common calculator was a slide ruler. But of course you were
not born then.

 

The first calculator I ever saw was a Wang desktop at college in 1971.
I bought my first handheld calculator, a Sears 4 function for $100 in 1972.
Bought my first computer (TRS 80) in 1975. It used a cassette tape recorder
for storage.

Yeah, Mark's seen it all.... except for a spell checker.

Mark,
Your queries fail because the syntax is wrong. For one thing, the "type"
property does not refer to file extensions. In addition wild cards are
not needed if "teststring" is a word. Use the "ext" property to return
..txt files, for example:

textstring ext:txt

Search syntax has changed greatly, as described here:

I built SIncalir ZXspectrum around Z80A microprocessor bootlegged from
Western Europe, since Soviet microprocessor at the time (MK80) was a poor
copy of Intel8080, it was not in favor for gaming.

Yes I also was a teenager interestedin gaming (you see me blasting Vista
exactly for the opposite - too much catering to gaming/media public, not
busienss).
Anyways, it features a whopping 32 KILOBYTE memory and rumors were that some
people managed to install a controlleer for 64KB.
64KB! Popular magazines were still publishing schematics and DYI articles
about 16KB PCB boards attached to a acssette recorder as nonvolatile storage
and TV as monitor, and here we got 32KB and 64KB coming up.

Imagine, 32Kilobyte memory? What more can you wish for?!?
I programmed in Basic a solution to Fourier series problem in college, I got
a D for that course regardless. Nobody cared for computers, they wanted an
analytical solution, not numerical analysis.

I finally burned down my TV audio by soldering audio-out from SinclairZX80
into my TV soundchip. There were already sound IC's at the time, by the
way.
I soldered it to an IC pin found on schematics. Schematics were ALWAYS
enclosed with electronic goods at the time (now it's a secret), or maybe
because it was in a communist country where nobody cared about copyrights or
getting rich by copying schematics...

My first calculator was a Soviet copy of American texas Instruments..
When it come sto computers & electronics, Soviets coul donly copy. They
were betetr in optics, Space, Mechanical design, but electronics/ecomputers
& roboticis for some reason was best in the West and East Asia.

Still is. Russians still are the best in Space and heavy machinery,
mechanics, but computers are all American, Asian.
