How clone a 2 1/2" laptop drive

Discussion in 'Windows Vista' started by rmo555@cox.net, Oct 15, 2009.

  1. I want to use Acronis to clone my disk (laptop). How do I choose a
disk and plug it in to my laptop (which only has one disk drive and no
    extra bays)?

Sorry - I forgot to cross post......

Plug it into a USB port. There are all kinds of adapters for that purpose.
Acronis will have no trouble with it.

Those are the kind of enclosures that Gene is talking about: ( 'hdd
enclosure - Search at Office Depot'
    ()
    ).

Can I purchase a "caddy" for the drive with a USB cord on it?

If you already have a drive, then you buy a 2.5 USB enclosure and install
the drive in the enclosure. Enclosures have the needed USB cord and the
    needed AC adapter.

If you don't own a drive, just buy a 2.5 USB already installed.

It can take quite a while to clone the disk. My system takes around 2 hours
to clone a 250 GB drive.

Don't quite follow what you're up to. Do you absolutely want to add a
drive or are you interested in replacing one or are you simply looking at
    backups?

If not replace, then two possibilities spring to mind: external drive
    (USB or firewire) or network.

I find it very comforting to have a backup drive 'just in case.' Of
course, I backup my entire drive (and network drives) almost daily.
However, the files and data on my primary disk are irreplaceable. With
a weekly or so backup disk drive and my (almost) daily backups, I'll
never (hopefully) have to worry about losing my info. I even backup my
drives to two independent backup external drives. I'm anal about
    backing up.

    s/anal/prudent/ :)

That is Unix slang for "no, you're not anal, you're prudent"...

If I clone a drive with more than one partition on it, will the other
    partitions be cloned automatically?

Depends on the software and on your choices when running it.

I think the free program EASEUS Disk Copy gives those options, but I
haven't used it in a while, so I don't fully trust my memory :)

I'm pretty sure Acronis gives those options, but I only use the
    single-partition option.

Yes. Acronis gives you the option to select the entire disk or specific
    partitions.

  15. Yeah - I just started an Acronis job five minutes ago, so I looked :)

Thanks for confirming my earlier guess/half memory.
