hang on start up

    Dear all
I have a Windows Vista PC from a friend to look at, that goes through
the DOS start up and get to the bar going across with Microsoft
corporation underneath it and if the PC has been off for some time, is
    just hangs there.

I can load in safe mode and also last good configuration etc, no problems.

Someone had tried to update the AVG Free Antivirus and it was shortly
after this that the problem occurred, I managed to sort out the AVG,
    but the above problem remains.

I did some searches for problems, and it came up with a Nero...exe
problem, which when I checked this, it told me it was nothing to do with
Nero Burning software, so I stopped it from loading. But the start up
    problem remains.

Anyone any suggestions please, some one told me that there is a problem
with Vista, trying to install updates on boot up?

    Any advice welcome please.
    Barry

Try disabling any antivirus software that loads on boot-up.
Autoruns from Sysinternals will show you what is being loaded.
    Download it from here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

It doesn't need installing, just unzip and run the autoruns.exe file from the folder.
    Right-click and run as admin.
Agree to the license and it will scan your computer listing everything, including loads of Microsoft entries.
Click on Options and select ' Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries '.
Click on the green arrows icon to refresh the list.
Now look down the list and see if you can recognise any antivirus entries.
Clear the box to disable or right-click to delete any entries.
You may see other entries that are non-essential and can be disabled to test.
You can right-click and Google any unknown entries.
    Good luck.

It seems some driver problems arise when you update the AVG. Usually Last
Known Good Configuration will restore your system already. You can use a
system restore to retrieve the settings before you updated AVG. Other things
to try will be to uninstall AVG and Nero totally and update the drivers
(Video, NIC, Mother Board, etc) when you boot in Safe Mode. You can use
msconfig to disable services and startup applications and see whether some
are causing that problem. It is also good to scan for virus in safe mode.

    Hi
Tried this prog, but if I try and right click or delete, a window pops
up run as administrator and a ok button, but nothing works. I cannot
delete from this program either, I had to delete via regedit.
Removed all references to AVG, but problem still exists.

    Hi
I have totally removed AVG, even gone through the Registry to clear all
references. The Nero think that came up, has nothing to do with Nero
Burning Software, as stated, so not touched that.
Someone told me there is a problem with Vista and Windows update files.

I cannot do a system restore, as it will only go back two days, no other
    dates coming up at all.

I shall try Msconfig tomorrow as I am too tired now.
    Will post results.

    Hi Barry,

Just you know, during system restore, if you check the check box on the
bottom says show restore point five days ago and proceed to click on Next,
it will show you the list of all the restore point Vista created when you
updated something on the computer. You may also try to boot up with the step
by step approach (should be listed along with the safe mode) to see where it
stops. Then you can update that particular thing in safe mode.

You have to run the program with administrator privileges.
    Right-click autoruns.exe and select ' Run as administrator '.

    Hi Donald,
No check box available for other restore dates, so for some reason
    something wrong there?
I am going to try the step-by-step and see if I can find anything.
    cheers
