How can I find a file I restored from the recycle bin? I didn't watch which
location it was restoring to and I don't remember the file name.

Do you remember the name of the file? Do a search for it.

The file is being restored to the same place (folder) from where you
    deleted it.

Quoting from the OP: "I don't remember the file name".

OP, you need to remember the file name or something about it that you can
search for. Even part of the name might work, or the file-name extension
could help. Or open the program you last opened it in and see if it's in
the list of recent files opened. Or go to the start menu - recent files.
Use your imagination or forget about the file.

Here's another alternative: go into a meditative state, or take a break and
don't think about it, and see if it pops into your head.

Well, if that's part of what he can't remember (as I seem to have assumed),
then maybe my post will be helpful to him after all.

The really stupid thing about the recycle bin is that you can't restore to a
    directory of your own choosing.

But you can cut and paste a file from the Recycle Bin.

The really *smart* thing about the recycle bin is that it restores the file
    to where it came from.

On the Mac under OS X, you can't restore a file to where it came from
unless you happen to *know* where it came from. Or unless there's a secret
    that I never discovered...

Okay, as I stated I don't remember anything about the file I restored.

Is there some kind of restored file history?
Or, is there a flag on restored files that can be searched for?

I have noticed with other restored files in the past that once they have
been restored they get their old modified date back so I know I cannot
    simply search by date modified.

No, you said you don't know where it went or what its name is. I suggested
other things that you might have recalled.

    From your original post,
"I didn't watch which location it was restoring to and I don't remember the

    I guess you've lost it.

It should have restored to the location you originally deleted it from. If
you don't know where that was the only other option I can think of is to use
the Windows search feature; do an Advanced Search, pick "Everywhere" as your
location and tick the box that says "Include non-indexed, hidden and system
files (might be slow)". Then go and have a cup of tea and hope it finds it.
In my experience, even though it's supposedly searching everywhere, Vista
still can't find what I'm looking for. There will be people on this board
who'll tell me that's because I don't know how to search properly and that's
probably true, but I never had any trouble finding stuff on XP.

Anyway, I'm starting to rant so I'll stop now. Good luck

What are you searching for? OP said they don't know the path or the
filename and it may have been restored with the original modified time which
    they wouldn't know.
You could manually browse through every file in every folder until you
    notice it...
or you could stop looking for it if you don't know what or where it is and
    it's not hurting anything.

I have a similar problem. I deleted a file from a portable hard drive,
but in the recycle bin I accidently restored it. But it does NOT show in
its original folder, I don't know where it is. I tried searching for it,
but without any luck. It doesn't occupy space on its original folder,
however it still fills the space on the overall space of hard drive, so
it must be somewhere. Is there some secret folder for these restored
    files?

Yes, of course I searched for it. I also put the control panel settings
to view hidden files and searched for it again, but without success. I
tried moving the files from the folder where the file was originally in
and then deleted the folder, but still nothing. And I am 1001% sure that
the file was in that folder, unlike the guy who started this thread with
a similar problem. I tried digging through my recycle bin, emptying it
over and over again. Nothing works. I've never experienced anything like
this before. It's like a ghost file haunting my portable hard drive.
